Blackveil Vaal Hazak Combat Info

  • Kinsect Extracts:
    • Red: Head
    • Orange: Body/Spore Sacs
    • White: Wings/Legs
    • Green:  Tail
  • Attacks:
    • Slap: Slaps you with its front legs at close range.
    • Charge: Lets out a short roar and charges forward surprisingly fast. Deals heavy damage, knocks you back and can stun.
    • Bite: Swings its head in a sweeping motion to try to bite you. Moves forward slightly during the bite. It may follow up the bite with up to two more bites.
    • Tail Sweep: Uses its tail to knock you back and potentially stun you.
    • Spin: Turns its entire body 180 degrees, knocking anyone back caught by it. May follow it up with a tail sweep.
    • Wild Effluvium Beam: Gathers power for a short duration to shoot a beam of effluvia in a very erratic pattern. Deals high damage, can stun.
    • Sweeping Effluvium Beam: Gathers Effluvium to sweep a fan shaped area in front of him with a continuous beam. Heavy damage, can stun.
    • Downward Effluvium Beam: Gets up on his hind legs and gathers Effluvium to shoot the beam down right at its feet. Clouds of Effluvium will disperse from the center in multiple directions, dealing moderate damage and knocking you back on contact.
    • Retreating Effluvium Spew. Moves backwards while spewing clouds of effluvium. Deals high damage and knockback up close, deals chip damage at longer distances.
    • Advancing Effluvium Beam: Slowly moves forward, sweeping the area in front of him with a beam of Effluvium.
    • Effluvial Aura: It is constantly surrounded by an aura of Effluvium, dealing chip damage up close. Can be dispelled with an Elderseal weapon.
    • Spore Clouds: The fungal growths on its body will periodically spit spores in all directions, dealing high chip damage. If his effluvial aura was dispelled, the fungal spit will stop too.
    • Recover: Stands up on its hind legs and gathers all his lost Effluvium. If not interrupted, he will regain his Effluvium aura and regrow all its Fungi.

  • Enraged mode: It stands up on its hind legs and roars while gathering its Aura of Effluvium. It then proceeds get back on all four feet, dealing minimal damage but knocking you back.
    • Generally raises his attack speed and frequency.
    • The fungi on his body will shoot more spores.
    • Gains a unique attack where it hovers in the air briefly and bursts forth spore pods in every direction. The pressure from this explosion can knock the player back if they are too close to the epicenter, as well as getting hit by one of the spore pods (which can also stun the player). These spore pods will then explode, creating a thick fog in a large circle for 60s and will cause significant damage to players within it. This fog does stay fairly low to the ground, so elevating yourself (such as when mounting the monster, which causes it to fly) is one way to avoid this damage.

  • The Fungal patches on its body can be broken.
  • Effluvia Resistance 3 will prevent your health from being cut in half, also consider Nulberries if you can't fit Effluvia Resistance into your build.
  • Is immune to flash effects until the spores coating its head are broken
  • Repeatedly using the Slinger Burst to slam him into a wall will eventually result in a head break.
  • Contact with the spores will occasionally alter the appearance and behavior of some small animals, such as wingdrakes, jagras, and aptanoths.  They will appear gray/ashen and become aggressive.

Blackveil Vaal Hazak Combat Tips

  • Equip at least three Miasma Jewels to mitigate the effluvium's damage. This decoration is easily slotted in and crucial for survivability.
  • Blackveil Vaal Hazak is weak against dragon and fire elements. Consider using dragon weapons to exploit its vulnerabilities, and equip Elder Seal to prevent its powerful finishing move.
  • Break Spore Sacks: Target the giant spore sacks on its belly and head. Breaking these weak points will significantly ease the battle by reducing the potency of its attacks.
  • Target the Weak Points: Aim for the head, chest, and wings for maximum damage. Breaking the spore sacks is a priority, as it weakens Blackveil Vaal Hazak's overall capabilities.
  • Screamer Pods: Bring screamer pods and extra screamer sacs to craft more. Use them when Blackveil Vaal Hazak is enraged and underground to draw it to the surface, creating opportunities for attacks.
  • Battle Strategies:Stay Below Back Legs: Position yourself beneath Blackveil Vaal Hazak's back legs to avoid most of its attacks. This tactic proves effective, except for its burrowing move. Exploit environmental traps and hazards to create openings for attacks.
  • Environmental Advantage: Utilize the surroundings to your advantage. Wall slam the dragon and drop boulders on it to deal significant damage and disrupt its movements.
  • Beware of the Effluvium: Keep an eye on the effluvium clouds. Use the environment to clear them, and consider bringing a fire weapon to burn away lingering clouds.
  • If using a dragon weapon with Elderseal, focus on applying consistent pressure to prevent the elder dragon from executing its devastating finishing move.

Insect glaive makes this fight pretty trivial since you can avoid all the stink that he leaves everywhere.

      • Anonymous

I died while chasing it as it was running away (skull blinking on mini map). I dont know what happened. I have 3x effluvia resistance equipped as well..

        • Anonymous

The biggest Mistake with this fight is that he is in the forest, which is quite cramped and Vaal uses a lot of area covering attacks.

          • Anonymous

After seeing all the comments here about Effluvia Resist 3 making the fight easier, I figured this fight would be a walk in the park. Unfortunately, Effluvial Expert does not seem to have the same effect as Effluvia Resist. Got there eventually but definitely one of the more annoying monsters I've fought, having to pop a nullberry after most attacks.

            • Anonymous

it is literally impossible to fight him with nullberries effluvial resistence is heavily reccomended due to this

              • Anonymous

Dude went from being my favorite fight in the game to one of my least likable figts. His design is so much cooler than regula vaal hazak doe

                • Anonymous

The armor is soooo SICK!!! But it's ass to fight....it thought it would be a just little bit harder than vaal hazak....boy I was wrong... didn't think I would struggle as much as I do... welp...gotta learn ig

                  • Anonymous

Damn, he has so much hp. I had Effluvia Resistance 3, used a fire-element weapon, dropped 4 mega barrels on him (2 on each try) when he limped back to his nest to sleep and he survived. I eventually slayed him 11s before the time is out when I tried to hit him with my kinsect for red buff, lol.

                    • Anonymous

He is sort of fast but he doesn’t hit that hard so I would take evade window and/or evade extender. Effluvia resistance isn’t needed but is very helpful. If you don’t take it you NEED nulberrys. I highly recommend health boost and eating for +50 health at the canteen even if the bonuses are bad. I would not focus on using element for him because he isn’t really weak to anything. He has a big health pool so I would recommend taking attack lvl5-7. If you want you can also take blast and put blast attack. If you are concerned about healthy I took the IG with a healing kinsect. I know it was a bad idea but I still beat him. When actually fight him you have got to break the spores. I would also break the head of you can but it isn’t needed. You should stay to his side since most of hits hit in front of him. He still has moves that hit to the side though so be cautious. If you stay next to him and you see him go on his hind legs RUN! He has one killed me many times with the downward breath. I think that is all I have to say. Happy hunting and don’t give up!

Hits like an actual baby at this stage of the game. Most of his attacks are light damage with lots of effluvia blight, so max out effluvia resistance and not even his gassy supernova is that scary. The long lasting death clouds can be overcome with a health booster, saving a ton of potions while allowing reckless and aggressive play.

                        • Anonymous

hes not very hard but has some annoying attacks and hitboxes, effluvia resistance is a must,. use the acidic glavenus helmet.

the bad parts are made up for by his cool design and how silent and creepy the ancient forest is. very cool fight

                          • Anonymous

This should be a part of the iceborne story. He was once a regular Vaal Hazak, but something big happened in the Rotten Vale, forcing him out. So he Effluviumed a bunch of mushrooms, attached them to himself, and left for the Ancient forest. Also, after you kill him, you go to the rotten vale and kill the thing that drove him out.

                            • Anonymous

So I'm planning to use the same build TDS Chris used when he beat it damageless, but of course everyone says to use an acidic glavy helm. True spareshot is really good, though, but nargacuga armor just feels so weak, and I was wondering if anyone had any build reccomendations.

                              • Anonymous

I'm struggling with this mushroom, but here are a few things I noticed. When he does any effluvial beam, try to get behind him, because he literally can't turn around when doing those attacks. The spores and head are it's only actual weakpoint. I strongly recommend a bowgun with flaming ammo. Just walking through his effluvial puddles will cause effluvial buildup, and if your health is too low, it will kill you. He surrounds himself in effuvial puddles when he does the supernova, so you either have to get effluvial buildup or wait it out. Shieldspire is my reccomended palico gadget.

me reading the comments "why do u give this guy all the hate he looks cool" after fighting this turd IQ-ed moron "i can see now why u people despise this fungus"

                                  • Anonymous

Hello Everyone, hope your hunts are going the best possible. I have fought this living mushroom a couple times now and i figured i could try and give some tips.
farm as much of the Acidic Glavenus set you can, i understand the chestpiece needs a mantle and thoughs have a really low obtain rate, so just get as much effluvia res and or health boost as possible, though Effluvia res should be your top priority.
if your a hammer or great sword main i suggest getting the acidic glavenus weapons sharpness is ok but its got great damage, if you add ironwall you can guard more (though effluvia still goes through and damages you.) or add hidden element for lots of paralysis allowing for big bang combos or true charge slash combos.
BRING NULLBERRYS. these deactiveate the effluvia on you so if you dont have max effluvia res bring them.
TEMPORAL MANTLE IS YOUR FRIEND. For those unsure how to get this or cant find the huntsman in astera he is in seliana and you must complete this questline:slay a teostra, repel lunastra and slay lunastra and teostra .(beware there bond attack!) anyway the temporal mantle will auto evade you from attacks unless your in the air or clutched on. i know this drains a lot out of the mantle but if you repeatedly tenderize or flinch shot into a topple you can attack the target spot or simply be invincible while using the glaive. you could also use it to sharpen as you might get lucky enough to have your meter reset then auto evade. for those who have played generations ultimate, its basically absolute evasion.
Blackveil is definitlly dangerous during when its enraged, as effluvium will secret in an aura much like kushala daora's wind, so be sure to be careful. its laser has quite some range (especially compared to GU Ukanlos) and can inflict effluvium. when blackveil traverses to the area with water in the vale DO NOT GO IN IT THAT IS ACID AND IT WILL DAMAGE YOU. that is all the info i have found so far and i will update if necesary. happy hunting!

Bruh why do people think this is so hard, I just got to it at mr 19 and almost have its armor finished in one day.

the laser beam attack doesn't flinches you and ticks for a several time in a matter of second insta carting you. on other hand you get knocked away by stupid gas clouds. is this for real?

                                        • Anonymous

by far on of the most stupid fight of the game. The AI is terrible and his ability is just cheese.

MR is a terrible mode in general, and it goes to its apex with him.

It shouldn't be that bad if not for those cloud attacks. The goddamn hitbox. Where does it end? Where does it begin? I despise cloud-shaped attacks in any game with every fibre of my being because I CAN'T SEE THE GODDAMN HITBOX.

Idea: set the quest for 2 people and get tons of heal power and spam it when someone gets effluvia buildup

                                              • Anonymous

Pretty easy elder dragon. Took me 26 minuntes to kill him with explosion element hammer in first attempt. Get that 3x Effluvia resistance and just dodge xD, nothing special. If you progressed to that monster in Iceborne you should be more experienced and kill him without any major problems.

                                                • Anonymous

Imagine having 3x Effluvia resistance AND clearmind charm, yet still taking massive damage from his effluvia aura and effluvia clouds. Whoever coded this fight is a clown.

I would recomend Acidic Glavenus head because 1 some people are already farming him due to his weapons. and most people have at least 1 miasma jewel so those two together give level 3

The pulsating spore clumps that appear when enraged are not armored well, you can deal better damage if you focus on them. Most of him is armored, a clutch attack is very useful to soften him up. Thankfully there is a spore patch at the start of his tail, makes cutting it easier,

                                                              • Anonymous

Ya know he was a real pain when ifirst fought him because...you know... effluvium X2. but now he's just fun and his armor is cool, espacially the head which is just a skull. Credit to capcom and the smithy

                                                                • Anonymous

Intesting that it's not in the wiki but this dragon has another attack with its "smoke".

If you or other creatures are covered in its smoke while its sucking the smoke back in, you will die while in range. The monsters will also die. I'm not sure if this is it's way of eating while hurt so it can heal or just a secondary attack though.

I went in the assign quest with clearmind charm thinking I’ll destroy this thing. Ended up beating him after 35 min, two carts, and a ton of nullberry & potions

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

To echo an older comment regarding randos who are too cool for effluvia resistance: on a no-faints allowed tempered blackveil investigation yesterday, someone proceeded to cart via spore puff, *as vaal was limping away to sleep*. Their full green health bar disappeared faster than I could blink. Christ people, the fellshroud greaves alone provide a two spot effluvia resistance. Use it.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Somebody looked at Vaal Hazak, and said: 'this rotting, diseased zombie dragon is just not disgusting enough... what if we put spores on it?'

                                                                          • Anonymous

Where'd that smoke thing name even comes from? His Japanese title translates to Death-Clad Vaal Hazak, his epithet: Decrepit Corpse Dragon.

                                                                            • Anonymous

The dragon weakness is honestly a trap. Real weak are just the spore sacks (0,2) and tail and wings (0,15). Head, stomach and back are immune to dragon dmg until broken, after that they are really weak (0,25). Same goes for legs (0,05 goes to 0,2). I also would advise to use a melee weapon since the ranged hitzone values are utter trash apart from the head (unbroken 0,5/ broken 0,6) and maybe the sporesacks (0,45). Fire dmg hitzone values are ok, almost everything is around 2 stars (0,15 to be exact), even unbroken (head, back and stomach going up to 0,2 when broken). Tl;dr: Use raw dmg

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Why do people enter this fight without effluvia resistance? Why? Miasma gems turns this fight from a tightrope into a cakewalk, but it seems like a good 2/3 of the randos I run into are like "nah bro, I'm too cool for this whole 'surviving' thing. That's not nearly as important as my awesome smack-other-players-while-whiffing-true-charged-slash DPS!" My eyes burn when a dude with 1/4 of his health charges in to attack the tail while it's poison puffing. But I guess it's my fault for SOS'ing, too. Oh well.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I swear, I was losing my***** after 3 attempts, twice with my main weapon, the lance, once with my off-main weapon, bow. He completely *****ed me, besides the bow attempt, in which I died my third time on the literal 50th minute (I quit to not lose my wasted items). Then I put in 3 Effluvia gems into my armor, and suddenly I have no problems whatsoever with my lance. Aside from the Large Elder Dragon Gem I need, I could make two whole sets of his armor now, really recommending to try getting effluvia debuff resistance slotted if anyone has problems, might help!

                                                                                          • Anonymous

fantastic fight for me. Its still hazak so its pretty much the usual side hugging but his new moves allows for more LS foresight slash/Iai slash opportunity. his downward breath is probably not tested enough though and need some patching. I'm pretty sure I countered it every time it happens but somehow the attack still hit my back side sometimes. needs to position myself really well before the counter to get a clean foresight slash.
