Diablos is a Large Monster in Monster Hunter World (MHW). ディアブロス (角竜) in Japanese. Diablos, a formidable wyvern inhabiting the Wildspire Waste in Monster Hunter World, is recognized for its powerful charging attacks and imposing horned visage. Known to burrow beneath the sand, Diablos can ambush hunters with swift and devastating charges. Beware of its roar, as it can disorient and leave hunters vulnerable to follow-up attacks.

  • Black Diablos is the female variation of Diablos. – “These black-shelled Diablos are actually female Diablos in heat. The color signals their aggressiveness and heightened hostility to other creatures in their habitat.”

The apex monster of the Wildspire Waste.
A menacing, territorial beast that lurks underground.
Loud noises will cause it to lunge out of the sand in search of prey.

Diablos Combat Info

  • Diablos can burrow and traverse underground quickly, attacking from different angles.
  • This monster has an ability that manifests as a loud shout / roar, which can cause mhw stun status effect sStun. Players may block this by using earplugs.
  • mhw ice damage sIce is the most effective element against it.
  • Weakspots on the head, wings and chest, which can be broken.
  • Susceptible to paralysis iconParalysis.
  • Resistant to mhw fire damage sFire and mhw thunder damage sThunder to a lesser degree.
  • Kinsect Extract:
    • Red: Horn, Head, Neck, Tail, Tail Tip
    • Orange: Stomach, Back, Left Wing, Right Wing
    • White: Left Leg, Right Leg
  • Diablos can be forcefully brought to the surface by using loud sounds, such as with a screamer podNoios and the Hunting Horn melody Sonic Waves. Its charging attack, while devastatingly powerful, can be baited into colliding with a wildspire, momentarily getting Diablos stuck.
  • Diablos is surprisingly quick and has a deceivingly large range, so be ready to dodge whenever the monster begins an animation.
  • Diablos is most powerful at the start of the fight. An effective strategy is to kite it around the arena, tiring it out. It is much slower and far less aggressive while exhausted, making the fight much easier.
  • When weakened, Diablos will often go to area 14. Here it has access to a new attack, where it burrows into the ground and erupts from the flowing sand walls.

MHW Diablos Attacks & Movesets

Diablos can perform the following attacks:

  • Charging Horn Attack: Diablos charges towards hunters with tremendous speed, using its formidable horn to deal devastating damage. Evading or blocking is crucial to avoid getting trampled.
  • Burrow and Resurface: Diablos can burrow underground and move beneath the surface to reposition itself. It then resurfaces with a powerful lunge, catching hunters off guard. Keep a watchful eye on its movements to predict resurfacing locations.
  • Tail Swipe: Diablos swings its tail in a sweeping motion, covering a wide area. This attack can catch hunters behind or to the side of the wyvern. Evading or positioning strategically is essential.
  • Roar and Stun: Diablos emits a powerful roar that can stun nearby hunters. Equip Earplugs or time dodges to avoid being incapacitated, allowing for a swift recovery.
  • Horn Thrust Combo: Diablos performs a series of thrusting attacks with its horn, creating a deadly combo. Evading or blocking these rapid thrusts is critical to avoid taking substantial damage.
  • Sand Blast: While burrowed, Diablos can release a sand blast, causing damage to hunters in the vicinity. Pay attention to visual cues when Diablos is underground to anticipate this attack.
  • Charge and Turn: Diablos charges at hunters, but may abruptly turn during the maneuver, catching them off guard. Be prepared to adapt quickly to its movements to avoid getting hit.
  • Dust Clouds: Diablos can kick up dust clouds during certain attacks, reducing visibility for hunters. Stay vigilant and anticipate its movements, even when obscured by dust.

Dunno if it is a bug or not, but this guy in MR for me just literally skips animations. For example: When it goes underground, after it gets to the surface again, it's already attacking even before I can recover from my Superman Dive, making it impossible to I-Framce in some cases and making the whole fight really annoying.

Diablos is not an omnivore, not only is it stated many times they are herbivores specifically and they've only ever been seen eating cacti. The "hunting prey" comment is almost certainly just diablos being territorial and aggressive. Even if diablos did infact eat meat occasionally, that doesn't make it an omnivore or else 90% of real herbivores would need to be reclassified.

Is this the hardest hitting monster at low rank? I swear that her ramming attack is as strong as a HR Anjanath bite

          • Anonymous

One of if not THE best fights for any budding Charge Blade fans, attacks kb you enough to force learning to guard point, but are slow enough that you can learn them. If you want to learn timing, aim, and positioning for CB, Diablos is a great fight.

10/10 diablos is a god boy and i wish there was more info on him that you can find withoutlooking in the deep corners of internet

Does his roar actually stun? I've never once been stunned by a roar from diablos and I've so many hours in the base game alone, add in my iceborne hours and its odd I've never seen anyone stunned by his roar. Just the usually stumbling with a large monster roar.

At first its difficult. And when you get used to it it get more fun. Even if its Black Diablos the fight can get pretty exciting for me. Still hard, but fun. And hey, at least they’re not planning on putting deviants in this game. Because if they did, we would have to fight one of the hardest monsters in the series.... Bloodbath...

I'm pretty new and ended up coming across this in wildspire for the first time like ' 0Ooo whats this?!' ... Gave it a go but it totally annihilated me! haha. Omg though, the satisfaction i got when i encountered it again much later second time (hr 8 i think), outside of the cave and i was using greatsword then. Still made me faint twice, but when i slayed it, i was like yeayyy! ^^)/ It also looks very cool!

I’ve always thought diablos was blind because his horns pretty much were blocking his vision and he does not have good eye sight and he burrows and mostly stays underground so what’s the point of his eyes even though he could just hear around because it states “diablos can burrow to traverse quickly around the environment and shoots out of the sand and rock when it here’s loud noises and searches for prey

                        • Now that I tried out more weapons and hunts against this guy, I can say that my previous comment didn't really help. He is the embodiment of an endurance test, giving any slow weapons no chance to hit and light weapons little chance to combo. I found a max guard Lance would do the trick. Just block the charge, and hit the head. Either way, it is one of the more long and boring fights in the game.

Thing is, learning the patterns is pretty easy, but for me, I just can't reach the damn thing half the time before it goes for another attack and I'm stuck waiting for it to calm down again

                            • After 1,000 hours on MHW, Diablos is not the same hard monster you feel in the first encounter. Underground Burrowing is not the death anymore. :D Learn 3 crazy Diablos strategies I'm using on SOS these days.→ Search GamesTunnel Diablos

This pest has given me the biggest headache of any monster I've ever fought. Then again, brute wyverns tend to be the bain of my existence (barring uragaan and it's variants). mind you, I haven't fought 1 since MH tri. 2nd hardest would have been finding a competent group for alatreon

(for new players). Most if not all of the Diablos weapons are good in raw attack stat, however the only things keeping the weapons back are the lack of sharpness, and the minus affinity (although that is not the biggest problem as most sets come with some kind of affinity boosting skill). All you need to be effective however is just non element boost and handicraft and you should be good to go. (also a side note, if you have any taroth horn weapon i would request you craft the actual diablos weapons as when ice borne drops the taroth and kajarr weapons will become useless after a short while...)

                                    • Anonymous

For anyone farming the horns: Bring any weapon with sleep (or a Palico weapon, will take longer though) and try to get it to sleep as fast as possible. Then just put 2 Mega Barrel Bombs next to it's head and wake it up with your strongest attack to the head. That is usually enough to break one horn and damage the other one. Good luck.

I just got a Majestic Horn as a *Quest Reward* from a HR Investigation (+ another Majestic Horn for actually breaking both horns in that mission). That's why I do not recommend leaving after breaking both horns. Just a quick tip for people farming the horns.

My first kill of the Diablos was using the first tier of the Legiana bow. Didn't really use the special ammo skill, just made use of dodging and firing arrows in 1/2/3 bursts. Fainted once, but won first go with using it.

For dual blades, which is what i use, use flash pods, maxpotion, rations, demondrug and armorskin both demondrung and armorskin last until you cart, and use immunizer to recover red health faster ,before even starting the fight, I always go and GET AN EXTRA PALICO or GRIMALKIN, open the map and right click the white cat icons then follow the green sparkles to get the extra cat. and hit diablos legs to knock it over. and then lure diablos outside where there is a cat on a hill blowing this horn and jump off a ledge and mount him there and he will get stuck in vines, thats what i did and it worked for me. and i was using dual blades.

I had a harder time fighting Rathalos than Diablos. Diablos armor helped me take on the Rathalos better. Idk why people are bitter about him. Get gud is all I gotta say about that.

                                              • Anonymous

To everyone who is confused about why Diabolos is not a brute wyvern: Usually the build of a monster determines what it is. That is why the Diabolos is a flying Wyvern: He shares anatomic similarities to Rathalos, Legiana and the rest. Pukei-Pukei falls under a different category tho: it is an early game monster. All early game monsters that were winged (usually Yian Kut-Ku or Gypceros in previous games) are also bird wyverns. Also all Raptor-Like Monsters and monsters Related to other bird Wyverns (Yian Garuga) fall under the Bird Wyvern category.

Diablos like to spam his underground sand attack towards me. I can avoid sometimes but when he hit me with that attack.. half of my health is gone. Which armor should i use? To receive lesser damage towards his underground attack.

                                                  • Anonymous

                                                    • Anonymous

Ok, I see a lot of people that are trash talking Diablos, and some have tried to help. But, it seems that nobody takes the hint. I don't even know why, but maybe one more person giving some of the BEST HINTS for hunting Diablos will finally get it through to some people. Ok, so. As mentioned in other comments below, Diablos has a very generic, timed, and learn-able patter. I personally learned Diablos' patterns by just doing the mission over and over until I got it down. So, just learn his pattern would probably be the best tip for any and all players. There is no amount of button-mashing, roll spamming, or just attacking whenever it seems right that will help you through this fight. Secondly, I have tips for two different types of weapon users. If you use hammers, you are going to want to go for the horn first. The best time to attack is right after Diablos pops out of the ground after a dig. BUT, if you are a Longsword user (like me), you will want to go for the tail. I say this because it is easier for said weapons to do said tasks. Of course, you have the option to switch to hacking at the other side, and then work your way to the chest. As a third: Environmental Tips. if you are above, in area 8 I believe (correct me if im wrong), you will want to lure the Diablos into charging into the spires, as much as possible, so you can have the best possible way to have as much damage output. If you are below, in area 12 (again, correct me if i'm wrong), you will also want to do the same things. However, the flashflys can be much more important. After the spires have been worn out, and the Diablos has not been caught or killed, then the flash flys will come in handy. To put them into greatest effect, you will want to use them right before Diablos charges you. The reason I say this is because, although it takes some pretty good timing, on both environmental tips, the Diablos will not turn away if it is on the path of charging. After all of that, you should be able to complete your mission on hunting the Diablos. Hopefully, this was really helpful to somebody out there still struggling. If I did help, or you feel the need to correct me if I misspelled or anything, please do. Your welcome to anyone and everyone. Good day.

Diablos is often seen as a wall for a lot of players new to the series. If you feel like you breezed through the game but are stuck at Diablos, slow down, sheathe your weapon and just run around watching his attacks. All of his attacks are extremely telegraphed and easy to avoid with an obvious wind up. For his burrow, simply run perpendicular to the direction he is coming at you from and he will miss if he is not enraged. If he is enraged and he does a burrow, you may still get hit by this because he comes up much faster and closer to you, so either superman dive to avoid the damage or use a screamer pod as soon as he burrows to give yourself a damage opportunity. If your weapon is sheathed and you just keep running or even just jogging in a circle around him, none of his attacks will hit you allowing you to easily learn his attacks and his tells. He hits very very hard, often hard enough to 1 shot you if you're fighting him without higher level armor so take it slow and get familiar with his moves. He is designed specifically to punish mistakes, and becomes one of the easiest monsters in the game once you learn him due to the telegraphed nature of his attacks. This advice is applicable to most monsters, so try this any time you feel like you've hit a wall and found a monster you can't beat.

                                                                • Anonymous

Frustrating, cheating monster. Has a larger reach than its model, gets up from prone in less than a second and attacks relentlessly - One screwup can lead to a KO from full, no amount of button mashing will save you, enjoy the faint. As a hammer user, you can cheese him by luring him to a ramp and jump attacking him over and over. In order to get him to follow you outside of bonds, he needs to burrow. Avoid the "sandfall" room where he goes to rest, there's no point in fighting him there, wait for him to burrow and run outside.

                                                                  • Anonymous

I go ham on Rath with maxed out leg gear and a leg LS and bam easy day not one faint...Go ham on Diablos he laughs , says a yo mama so stupid joke and makes me faint out of utter humiliation....seriously??

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

This fight is relatively easy if you played previous games and used the blangonga weps to fight, literally the same move set and highly predictable charges. Just bait him in the pillars and hack at the horns until both are off for majestic horn drops. Only thing is that tail pain to chop off.

                                                                        • Anonymous

His armour's okay too, it's a bit bulky though... somebody needs to fire the person that designs the armour at cap com :/

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

If I may offer some advice on fighting this... thing, the wings are a weak point, but they can't be broken. I usually try to go for wings first to reduce mobility, but Diablos' will not break. Instead, go for the head first and get those horns broken off. The hit boxes on those things are gigantic and breaking them will severely limit his reach.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Glacial Cannon I Gunlance with Legiana Helm, Vambraces, Coil, Odogaron Chestplate, Anja Greaves. Makes this guy pretty simple, just hold up guard whenever he does anything and use the Guard Stabs, Shelling, and occasionally dash stab.

                                                                                • Anonymous

I started getting hurt a lot less, once I figured out a handy tell of his. Whenever he starts taking a few slow steps forward, RUN! He's about to charge. Even if you're behind him, he can do a quick 180 turn and charge straight at you. I used to get hit by this a lot, because did not look at all like a windup for a damaging attack.

At this point, his burrowing attack had stopped being a problem for me. After all, he leaves himself open for so long when he's climbing out of the ground. Once avoiding it becomes second nature, it changes from a nuisance to an opportunity.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I feel like lately, he has just been spamming his Dig attack, first time I fought him, he seemed a hard but fair boss, now he just wants to dig, an I have been pretty miffed from him doing it three times in a row, pops out, digs down and pops out moments later, I understand the need for a screamer pod but this is insanity lol

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Most annoying Boss in Monster Hunter history. In every Quest there are two of them (in High rank). and they are always together in one zone. Even if it's limping it's nowhere near death. First I was like: Yeah I'll farm it to build Cera-Ringbeuger, but everytime I did the Quest there was a Diablos too and they teamed up and ragdolled me throu the map. Not worth it. Way to hard boss for way to low pay.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

For heavy bowgun's fighting the diablos. Just keep distance once he starts trying to attack you keep the distance at a range that you can hit his horns. Once those horns are off light it up. Load up wyvern heart if you want to get up close and deal some serious damage or if your a wyvern snipe get your self positioned to a reasonable position and fire the shot either at the chest or the back. Good luck hunters and may the tides show your luck. : 3

                                                                                        • Anonymous

I do have to say that this boi is like a triceratops on steroids. All in all I kinda enjoy this fight.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Being stunned, low health and seeing that the palico who got the aggro ( aka: eye icon atop his name) is chilling besides you, without a care int the world....

                                                                                              *faints*

Tactic for taking this beast down. Only possible with the legiana light bow gun. for this bring 60 freeze ammo and then 60 snow herbs. now down to business first off the charge attack is a glaring big exploit for wyvern fire so if you think he is gonna to charge place down 3 wyvern fire rounds and run from them, then when you see him actually charge dodge to the side. rinse and repeat until both horns are broken, also when possible fire freeze rounds. secondly with his dig attack, don't bother with your weapon and run around in a big circle this should be your not hit. rinse and repeat. The real problem is when he gets angry, I myself haven't predicted the AI enough to know what attack he will do, All I can say is if your far enough away he will either dig or charge at you both even if you have full legiana gear maxed out will take a chunk out of your health. Good luck and Praise The Sun. \('-')/

1: Keep your stamina up as you will need to constantly evade his attacks.
2: Keep weapon sharp as often as possible.
3: When attacking legs stay to his right as you are less likely to be body slammed that way.
4: When attacking tail stand right underneath by legs so if he does tail swipe you won't be interrupted.
                                                                                                  5: Don't pass out
