Kirin is an Elder Dragon in Monster Hunter World (MHW).キリン in Japanese. Kirin is a mythical Elder Dragon. Resembling a unicorn, Kirin is distinguished by its lightning-infused attacks, summoning storms and unleashing bolts of electricity. This majestic creature commands respect with its regal presence and potent electrical abilities. Hunters must exercise caution, as Kirin's attacks can cause Thunderblight, and its swift movements make it a formidable adversary. Confronting Kirin requires not only strategic planning, but also mastery over dodging its electrifying assaults.

Kirin are so rarely sighted that little is known of their ecology. It's been said they envelop themselves in pure electricity when they are provoked.

The lightning a Kirin cloaks itself with has been confirmed to toughen its skin. The key to hunting a Kirin lies in staggering it, using Elderseal weapons, and protecting yourself from and avoiding its lightning attacks.

MHW Kirin Attacks and Movesets

Kirin performs the following moves:

  • Lightning Bolts: Kirin summons bolts of lightning that strike the ground in a linear pattern. Hunters must be aware of the visual cues to evade these electrifying attacks.
  • Thunder Strike: Kirin charges itself with electricity and delivers a powerful shockwave around its body. Hunters in close proximity risk taking significant damage from this area-of-effect attack.
  • Thunder Horn Thrust: Kirin lunges forward with its horn charged, creating a line of electrified energy. Evading to the side is crucial to avoid getting hit by this swift and long-reaching attack.
  • Rearing Thunderbolt: Kirin rears up on its hind legs and releases a powerful thunderbolt in a targeted area. Hunters need to predict the location and quickly move out of the designated zone to avoid the impact.
  • Triple Lightning Kick: Kirin performs a series of rapid kicks imbued with lightning. Evading or blocking effectively is essential to avoid the consecutive strikes and prevent Thunderblight.
  • Thunder Stomp: Kirin lifts one of its forelegs and stomps the ground, creating a shockwave. Evading the stomping area is crucial to avoid taking damage and the potential Thunderblight status.
  • Electrical Charge: Kirin charges itself with electricity, enhancing the power of its attacks. During this phase, all of Kirin's attacks gain increased potency, making it a more formidable opponent.
  • Thundercloud Summoning: Kirin can summon thunderclouds overhead, heralding the onset of lightning strikes in the designated areas. Hunters must stay vigilant and relocate to safe zones to avoid damage.
  • Running Thunderstrike: Kirin charges at hunters with electrified speed, attempting to close the distance swiftly. Evading or using terrain strategically is crucial to avoid getting trampled.
  • Thunderbeam Sweep: In certain situations, Kirin may unleash a sweeping beam of lightning across the ground. Hunters need to be attentive to the visual cues and evade or block to avoid this high-damage attack.

At least with this it just needs to die once and special assignments can get out of the way.

Jumpy shocky ******* with melee-resistant hide at times can kill itself... now!

      • Anonymous

why does the wiki say "Kirin is available in Iceborne at MR 19 or higher." when there are multiple quests that are under MR 19 with Kirin in them such as "Gone in a Flash" and others? I'm really confused

        • Anonymous

Always so interesting to see comments about elders. For me, this was THE most annoying fight monster in the game. namielle, velkhana? No, this stupid little hoppy shocky paralyzy SOB always made my blood boil. But I use heavy weapons lol.

          • Anonymous

Kirin can be size 664.96 to be king. I know cause mine is. And I have a pic for proof. Idk how to update the site though.

            • Anonymous

Fun to fight, didn't feint at all using IG, the lightning took a third of my health bar so I made sure to avoid them.

Wasted a shock and pitfall trap on it tho, I was pretty..... Shocked to find out a horse is an elder dragon

              • Anonymous

This is the easiest elder... Horse? In the entire game.

Just grab a rapid fire flaming light bow gun and aim for it's neck and face.
This thing rarely ever carted me and I managed to get the gamma layered set.

However... If you are melee user then... Assume the position to receive Kirin's thunder horn in an unpleasant area.

                • Anonymous

This mf is a pain in the butt if fought with a heavy/slow melee weapon, save yourself a potential stroke by using range or fast melee weapons folks.

If you're struggling with him in the MR Special Quest, a good tip would be learning how to use the Lance. Personally, I defeated him with the elementless mr garon lance, you'll do better if you use a fire element lance. 2 piece uragaan, 3 piece teostra will work best. Slot in a warming jewel if you want for comfort since he is really spammy and the fight will take long.

                    • Anonymous

Why is Kirin a Elder Dragon? First of all, It does not have wings, Second of all, He's a horse not an Elder Dragon.

                      • Anonymous

                        A joke from Twelve Kingdoms:
                        - What do you get when you cross a horse and a deer?
                        - Stupid.

[Context: The kanji used to write "baka" literally translates to "horse deer"]

I don't know why but I am master rank and I joined a low rank quest and all of them were using thunder weapons. I thought to myself," I better get some extra frickin rewards for this."

                          • Anonymous

this is also another trivia for it: Kirin is the only elder dragon that can be encountered in Low Rank quests

Now this is what they should capture and contain for research instead of that mountain that you can't even catch plus its too big that zorah magdaros.

pretty annoying since Kirin has a very slim body and btw i'm an insect glaive user. Sounds like a horse an kicks like a horse, he's pretty easy now with shara ishvalda armor set since he is armor set gives 18 thunder resistant to thunder BUT still can get thunder blighted when hit 2-3 times.

this thing was actually easy in mr... now that you can soften its skin with clutch your attacks won't get deflected anymore...

So much for a fun-actiony game, with the introduction of jumpy, super high stamina creatures with a very low amount of time to hit them, this game just became for the super elite, and master Kirin is no exception. Holy F*** seriously, how the hell do you stop him for 3 seconds to land a good blow?

                                      • Anonymous

Low rank kirin was ez for my first elder dragon hunt. GL Master rank kirin , however, has killed all my teammates and knocked me out of the coral region.

First kirin hunt on low rank got me like " meh ez. Why people *****in' about this one". And i take back my word as master rank guiding land kirin killed all my teammates

thunderproof mantle is a godsend in the battle, with all of the paralyzes and stuns. fake unicorn dragon deserves getting eaten alive by the rajang that shows up.

Just had my first fight with a kirin. I use an insect glaive so I've gotten used to being the nimble one. Ended up chasing it back and forth across the Coral Highlands for what felt like forever and by the end of the fight I was sparking constantly and had only 1 potion left...then I get the thunderproof mantle lol. Next time I hunt it I'm taking that mantle and my hammer.

                                              • Anonymous

I remember my friends first time seeing Kirin. We were hunting the tempered one and they all said that it was nonthreatening and just a stupid unicorn. Five minutes in to the fight they died I love them and they are good at MHW but sometimes they can get really bad karma.

                                                • Anonymous

"Kirin is likely based on the mystical beast Kirin".... Well...it's a japanese game.... Do you really had to put that obvious information? Maybe rephrase it because it just sound dumb like that.

                                                  • Anonymous

Just beat the master rank version. As someone that used to be terrified of this pos, I highly recommend using a Charge Blade. Charge your sword and there’s no deflection, when he’s angered. Just dodge the lightning or use the temporal mantle, and wail on him like the d*ckhead he is.

                                                    • Anonymous

My best strategy for making dealing with this prick easier is me and my buddy both do one sacrificial clutch-claw to its body and do an attack on it. Orange gashes will appear on the body indicating it's softened and is open for affinity damage. It'll recover over time so once the numbers turn to white or either of us notice the gashes disappear, we both do it again. Helps to have either the temporal or the thunderproof mantle equipped while doing it. He likes to do his lightning ground zero when we attach to him.

                                                      • Anonymous

First time I saw this thing in MR expedition - went in thinking I'd smack the pony around and get my unicorn fur coat armor back. Then I saw that not only does it no longer stand in place for its lightning laser thing on the ground, but when charged it can cast 2 of those three shot attacks quickly enough to overlap them like a tic-tac-toe board. At this point, I'll settle for the palico armor.

                                                        • Anonymous

As a new player who is finishing up their HR farm and about to start iceborn after farming 3+ weapons off of every high end enemy in the game...I only have this to say. Kirin is not worth it....the fight is boring as hell...like a far less engaging Kushala Daora with far less rewards when you finish him off. I had planned on making 4 Kirin weapons but after getting 1 horn a run (if that) out of a 10-15 minute fight (for me anyway) I just said ***** it and quit after making the axe (and only so I could upgrade it to the Namielle weapon later). I'm not saying it's a hard fight, far from it. The only thing difficult about it is bringing myself to do such a boring ass boss again knowing I need 10 of an item I might get one of if I'm lucky. This horse is just...not engaging at all.

                                                              • Anonymous

In Iceborne, this fight is somewhat trivialized if you use the Clutch Claw properly. Just mount and wound his body when the lightning armor shows up, and boom, no more lightning armor, just bonus damage. Of course, a number of folks might die while trying to ride the horse at an inappropriate time, but it's a fair risk to take.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I was using Witcher Armor Set, t3 Stun resistance charm and 3 lightning resistance decorations (with res food it got me to 25 lighting res total). Weapon was Diablos Hammer, was using the usual buffs + Immunizer for health regen up but did not use any mantles. Ambushed Kirin right next to the upper camp where the slopes are and kept sliding + jump attack until he died. Honestly did not even need the food rez buff, should have probably gone with bonus carves meal instead.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Lance is quite a smooth ride for this, just hold shield and poke once or twice after Kirin attacks. It's helpful to stay to the side or behind Kirin as the forward buck attack is quick and will catch you if you try to attack after some of the lightning moves. For the lines, Guarding Advance + Leaping Thrust can allow you to easily reposition and avoid the high lightning damage. My setup was the Garon Dhara II with Dragonking/Damascus/Kaiser/Kaiser/Kaiser, all beta save for dragonking of course. 3x Antipara and 3x Steadfast for immunity to the "you're gonna *****ing die now" status effects, and 1x Thunder Res because more thunder resist is better. USE THUNDERPROOF MANTLE WHENEVER YOU CAN. It reduced the damage that I took by nearly half when I was at 20+ thunder resistance (eat for elemental resistance, use Nutrients or a Max Potion to get your HP fill). And of course, Ironside charm for the Guard boost, a very very important charm for any Lance setup. Mine was only II but you should get yours to III for safety. Best of luck!

                                                                        • Anonymous

The horse hit box, err, sweet spot, is not that small, not like vespoid. Even Kulu Yaku is smaller due to that boulder. But yes, those thunder zaps are annoying. Several times I am evading directly to the zap line, or getting up from the knock down at the wrong time. (。•́︿•̀。)

                                                                          • Anonymous

Hit and run tacktics are Optimal , hammer or charge blade are a + , aviod wapons with long combo strings like switch axe or dual blades. Ranged is alsof good , but takes ages because of his little pony head.

                                                                            • Anonymous

I want my epitaph to say "He was a noob, but he refused to let that stop him. Git gud!"

                                                                              • Anonymous

Beat him first try with my gunlance, I said i'm going to try it once with Randos with an SoS got 3 people who absolutely wrecked Kirin. I think it took about 11min for completion. I was running guard up so i could just tank all of its thunder attacks. I think I just got lucky with the randos otherwise it would of taken me a lot longer with it

                                                                                • Anonymous

Difficult fight with nearly worthless armor (only good trait is the thunder attack, which doesn't help against him) Yeah, think I'm going to shelf this game and wait for more content. Literally all of the high rank armor sucks for just about everything and it's difficult to obtain. Still wearing Vaal Hazak for the regen, if the reqard equipment is trash what's the point in even continuing playing?

                                                                                  • My first tempered kirin fight was pretty easy as bows make him look like a great jagras in the right hand. But the fight took way too long as his head's hitbox was far too small.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Okay, here goes... you see what you want to do, is just not hunt him at all because of how much of a little sh!t head he is. And that's how you beat Kirin.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

People actually made me afraid of tempered Kirin. I went in with max stun resist, max paralysis resist, and max thunder resist with the thunder proof and temporal mantle. I beat him first try. On top of that I’m new to the MH series. So either everyone’s been under prepping for the first tempered elder dragon fight of the game or y’all are talking about arch-tempered Kirin

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Few people know this, but if you manage to mount the Kirin and stay on for long enough without attacking it'll very slowly begin thrashing and running around less and less and after a variable period of time will eventually come to accept you riding it the same way a wild horse might. At this point you can ride the Kirin around like the majestic lightning unicorn it is firing your bow from its back like a cooler version of Link riding Epona. Should you then collect your palico, another cat friend tailraider, and a small monster tailraider you'll unlock the hidden "Beastmaster" achievement with the added bonus of being able to call on your Kirin at any time to help you fight. And also you'll never be lonely again. Or...or maybe I just dreamed all that :(

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Ohhhh so this is an actual Elder dragon? So my game actually wasn’t glitching out with the quest info? So they decided to make a horse and slap it under the “Elder Dragon” Category? Huh, yeah I get it, that makes sense.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Kirin is the first, and i feel only, large monster that FORCES you to play smart. You can't jump in with low thunder resistance, you HAVE to eat the correct food for elemental resistance. You have to use gear that counters him (Mantle) and you need to equip your palico with the horn for thunder and paralysis resist for when the mantle runs out. Often times players have an issue with tempered kirin because they run in with little or no buffs trying to take him on. Here's a list of what you should be bringing: Mega Potion Ancient Potion Max Potion Might seed Demon Drug Flash pods(? always have them) Mega Bombs x 4 (zzz) Power charm & talon Armor charm & talon Thunder resistance deco x 3 (Go to the melder) (I fight kirin with NERG armor. i get to +10 with 3) Thunder mantle. REQUIRED Coral Orchestra. REQUIRED Vitality mantle. Optional Before setting out, eat a fish meal for Elemental Resistance (L), then when you get to camp eat a max potion or drink your vitamins to top off health. When you get out of camp force your palico to sing for you and get a stun resistance. Wait for kirins stupidly predictable path, drop 2 mega bombs in it and wait for him to walk over them and start. Then drop 2 more at his resting face. Thunder mantle should be saved for enrage, if you need to learn his moves then use it at the beginning. and lastly, PLAY DEFENSIVELY. Kirin does massive hits. If you have less than 3/4th health HEAL. if not you are risking a 1 shot. Mega potions are stupid easy to come by, don't worry about burning them for half their effectiveness if it keeps you alive.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

I learnt that the reason kirin tracks dont show on the progress bar is due to you not doing the LR kirin quest first. You have to do a few capture quests first, starting with Kulu Yaku, then barroth, then paolumu and finally odogaron. Only then you will unlock an optional quest for a 5* LR Kirin. Only from there, your scoutflies will then be able to collect and process Kirin tracks in the coral highlands for HR Kirin

I sent up 5 today asking for help with Kirin and NOBODY *****ING ANSWERED!!! Why have this? WHY!!??? When I ask for help I expect *****ing help! Immediately! This is the*****tiest, most unfair monster in the entire *****ing game and I'm sick of attempting! I just want to get it over with once, just ONCE!!! *****!

                                                                                                                  Here's a idea.

When the Kirin is dying, everyone in the party places bombs at the base of the climbable walls. Specifically at the wall underneath the wedge beetle that's one floor above where the Legianna lands, or at the base/top of the long climb before the high nest. The 2nd option is likely more viable, because the wedge beetles in the area will allow us to reach those spots faster than the Kirin.

Since it always takes that route when it's dying, it would be a good opportunity to intercept it at those points and possibly knock it down. Not only that, but it's a guarantee that it goes to sleep once it reaches the nest which will allow us to set bombs down anyway. So using bombs as it's running away will maximize resources and likely kill it faster.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous
