Leshen is a Large Monster in Monster Hunter World (MHW).?? in Japanese. Leshen, an otherworldly and mystical creature, emerges from the ancient forest with an eerie presence. Cloaked in mystical energy and adorned with twisted branches, the Leshen possesses an array of magical attacks, summoning roots and woodland spirits to assail hunters. Encounters with this supernatural entity are marked by its ethereal movements and nature-infused assaults. Hunters must navigate the enchanted forest terrain and face the challenge of countering Leshen's magical attacks with both skill and adaptability.

Dwelling deep inside the forest, these creatures use their innate magic to control all flora and fauna within their territory. Revolures and Jagras controlled by a Leshen are tough to approach, but the Igni Sign is very useful in fending off Leshen's lashing roots.

  • This monster is resistant to mhw water elemental damage sWater and SleepSleep
  • Kinsect Extract:
    • Red: Head/Antlers
    • Orange: Waist/Body
    • White: Legs
  • The Igni Sign can be used to instantly kill the Jagras the Leshen summons. This is especially useful to keep a certain ally alive.
  • Dispell the cloud of Revoltures with the Igni Sign
  • You can actually mount the Leshen. The animation is weird and it has only one spot you grab onto, but it works nonetheless. Brace whenever it tries to shake you off and you will get a free knockdown.
  • Break the Leshens antlers twice to stop it from summoning Jagras. Easier said than done however. Mounting the Leshen will help.
  • SPOILERS!
    • While completing the "Investigation" that leads up to the fight, you will come across a Pukei-Pukei hanging dead in some roots. Head right to continue the quest, but if you head left, you will find another Pukei-Pukei, choked by roots. From there you should see a third Pukei-Pukei, barely alive and quite beaten up. Burn the Roots with Igni and it will fly away for now. It will later join Geralt towards the end of the Leshen fight.
      • Pukei will Poison the Leshen at least twice for some great Damage. It will also deal low physical damage
      • The biggest danger to Pukei are the Jagras. Make sure to deal with them as quickly as possible.
    • Keep Pukei alive with Dust of Life (make sure to grab the EZ Dust of Life from the chest at a base camp) and you will get a special reward at the end (Plus, it's just really heartwarming).

MHW Leshen Attack and Moveset

Leshen can perform the following attacks:

  • Root Strike: Leshen summons roots from the ground and strikes hunters with a sweeping motion. Evading or blocking effectively is crucial to avoid taking damage from this ground-based attack.
  • Teleportation: Leshen can teleport across the battlefield, repositioning itself strategically. Hunters need to stay vigilant and anticipate its movements to maintain effective engagement.
  • Summoning Roots: Leshen calls forth roots from the ground, creating obstacles that hinder hunters' movement. Navigating around or destroying these roots is essential for maintaining mobility during the encounter.
  • Tree Spike Barrage: Leshen causes sharp spikes to erupt from nearby trees, creating a barrage of projectiles. Hunters must evade or find cover to avoid the projectiles and prevent taking damage.
  • Ethereal Blast: Leshen releases an ethereal blast in a targeted area, dealing damage to hunters caught in the explosion. Evading the blast radius or utilizing terrain for cover is necessary to avoid significant damage.
  • Summon Jagras: Leshen has the ability to summon Jagras to aid in the battle. Hunters must contend with both the Leshen and the additional threats posed by the summoned creatures.
  • Warp Strike: Leshen warps to a specific location and performs a powerful striking attack. Hunters need to anticipate the warp and either evade or guard effectively to avoid taking damage.
  • Ethereal Shield: Leshen envelops itself in an ethereal shield, reducing damage from attacks. During this phase, hunters may need to focus on breaking the shield or finding alternative strategies to deal effective damage.
  • Summoning Woodland Spirits: Leshen can summon ethereal woodland spirits to assist in the battle. These spirits can attack hunters and complicate the engagement, requiring additional attention and awareness.
  • Abyssal Drain: Leshen can perform a draining attack, sapping the life force from hunters in close proximity. Evading or interrupting this attack is crucial to prevent significant damage and maintain health.

    • I assume weapon choice has a lot to do with how hard or easy this quest is. I'm a newer player (less than 200h) and I only use hammers, and I didn't find this fight to be too frustrating. Lots of stuns, and R2 attacks make quick work of jagras. My brain must be totally fried because I don't even remember a Pukei-Pukei, except for the one that was found dead in the roots.
There was one side quest I immediately failed as I was speaking with a researcher. Not sure if I needed to do something before speaking to them or if I needed to do something before starting the quest.

Is it possible to encounter Leshens outside of this quest? I don't want to replay it a bunch of time, but want to farm parts.

      • Anonymous

This quest is such a cool idea, but it's so lame becuase he has too much health. Geralt is no slouch, he can kill an ancient lessen on death March in w3 in like, 20 seconds, here it takes 20 minutes, maybe more. It's literally easier to kill ancient leshen in master rank gear later, coming back to this quest for kicks is now longer than the harder one.

To be honest, I don't care how many dislikes I get from this comment, but I enjoy the Leshen fight. It is well thought out, well planned, and the mechanics are easy to understand on the fly. Personally, I killed the Leshen 10 times(fought it 12, died first two attempts). Fighting it that many times has given me some insight and an in-depth study of its moveset. I noticed a moveset table on the Rajang page, so can someone make the table for Leshen? Anyway, Leshen's moveset ordered, here it is(Note that these are my labels for the moveset and not the official name of the attacks):

Claw swipe: This is what I consider Leshen's fast attack. It raises its right or left arm, mainly right, and swipes in a 180 arc in front of it. This attack can cause bleed, but it can be dodged with the right timing. Note that the range and bleed chance increase when Leshen is in its final phase.

Double Claw swipe: Leshen cocks back its right arm, then swings in front of it in a 180 arc. About 3/4 seconds later, Leshen swings it the opposite way. Be warned that this attack does track you, and Leshen moves forward with this attack. I was made aware of the tracking during my 7th run in Leshen's 2nd area(Pukei nest). Leshen did the attack, I dodged through the first one and started hitting hits butt, then it does a 180 turn and ***** slaps me so hard I bleed. Dodge away from Leshen when it does this, and you should be good. Just like most of its attacks, this attack's range and bleed chance increase when Leshen is in its final phase.

Slam: Leshen raises its right arm above its head, then slams the ground directly in front of it. This attack is well telegraphed and is relatively easy to dodge. Plus, Leshen's head is lowered, so free hits on that. This attack will knock you back and may cause bleed, but very rarely it does do so. It might have been luck, but I only bled from this attack twice in my runs. Leshen rarely uses this attack during its final phase, but its range and bleed chance increase during the final phase like most moves.

Root Burst(close): Leshen will plant both arms into the ground and shake for a bit, then release an explosion of roots centered on itself. If you are right next to Leshen when it does this, it takes two dodges to get out of the range. However, there is an exploit when it comes to this attack, and that is the y axis. I am a Sword and Shield main, so I was right in my comfort zone with the default gear. Leshen did this attack while I was in the middle of my combo that would launch me in the air, the attack triggered while in the air, and then I slammed my sword down its face.

Root Burst(far): Leshen will raise both arms and cross them. You will see roots form from between the fingers. It will then plant them in the ground, and that is when a small green flash will appear. You want to run away from that, as it will explode in a massive root explosion. From the center of the boom, it takes 3-4 dodges to get out, and you aren't given the time for that. The best way to avoid this attack is constant movement. Try to stay airborne if you can, but just run when you see Leshen do the telegraph. The good news is that you can interrupt this attack with the Igni sign, so long as you do it before Leshen plants its arms into the ground.

Root Line: Leshen plants its right arm into the ground and ******es, sending a line of roots toward you. This attack is relatively easy to dodge and well-telegraphed, so it didn't take long for me to realize how to best deal with it. When Leshen telegraphs this attack, run perpendicular to the line, then when it passes you, run towards Leshen. As a Sword and Shield main, I got one or two hits on the head before he reset.

Double Root Line: This attack has the exact same telegraph as Root Line, only the way it is executed is different. The first root line actually circles around, eventually crossing through your current position when Leshen uses it. But wait, there's more! Leshen ******es again and does another root line that follows this exact pattern on the opposite side. Leshen also emits small roots when he triggers either line, which deals a good amount of damage and knocks you back, so timing is everything when hitting Leshen when it uses this attack.

Crow Swarm: I know they are Revoultures in this game, but I call it the Crow Swarm, okay? Leshen will raise its right arm straight out in front of it and flick its wrist, causing a line of revoultures to travel in that direction. It deals low damage but knocks you down if you are hit. This attack is blockable with the Sword and Shield, so if you cannot dodge out of the way, block! However, this attack's AoE changes depending on the amount of Revoultures Leshen has circling it. If Leshen has no Revoultures, this attack's width is roughly equal to Leshen's. If Leshen has entered the first crow stage, this attack's width is roughly 3x Leshen's. If Leshen is in its final crow stage, this attack is replaced by Murder of Crows.

Murder of Crows: Leshen cocks its right arm over its left shoulder. After half a second, Leshen unleashes an unholy amount of Revoultures in the indicated direction. This attack has roughly 5- Leshen's width, so when you see this telegraph, and you'll know before it is complete, run perpendicular to Leshen. I would not recommend blocking this attack with Sword and Shield, as blocking it has the same result as if you didn't block Crow Swarm. This attack hits heavy, so be careful.

Jagras Call: Leshen howls, causing 3 jacked up Jagras to come and assist it. These Jagras have double the health a normal one does(Painfully calculating it) and have an increased chance to stun with their attacks(More pain calculating). Note that the Jagras summons are controlled by Leshen's antlers, so breaking those is key to stopping them. Breaking the antlers, you will not see a change until Leshen's final phase. During that phase, if Leshen has not had its antlers broken yet and is still fully intact, Leshen will summon 5 Jagras during this phase. If they are broken once, Leshen summons 4 Jagras instead of 5. If you somehow manage to break both of Leshen's antlers, a feat I have only done once, Leshen stops summoning Jagras entirely. You will know what stage of breakage Leshen's antlers are. If you break them once, they will be slightly chipped with visible white spots. If you break them twice, Leshen's left antler will be missing roughly half of the antler. Note that Leshen no longer uses this attack when both antlers are broken. The Jagras are one shot by the Igni, so try to get them as close to Leshen as possible before using it, stunning Leshen and killing the Jagras instantly.

Crow Call: Leshen raises its right hand and makes a swiping motion, causing Revoultures to summon and circle the Leshen. These Revoultures act as a damaging aura around Leshen, and Leshen can choose to stack it to a limit(3 seems to be it). The chip damage will increase depending on how many Revoultures Leshen has circling it. They can be dispelled with Igni, so use it as often as you can when Leshen has Revoultures circling it.

Root Wall: Leshen plants both arms into the ground, causing a root wall to form rougly in a 180 arc in front of Leshen. during this time, Leshen will favor attacks like Root Line, Double Root Line, Crow Swarm, and Murder of Crows. The wall dissipates when Leshen teleports, so keep that in mind. It can also be burned with Igni, and if you hit in in the right spot, it can also stun Leshen and hit it. This attack is damaging, though, if you stand where it springs up from ou of the ground. It will launch you and deal moderate damage.

Teleport: Leshen raises both arms in front of it, crossing them. It then teleports in a shroud of black mist and Revoultures. Leshen will then either teleport to a set location in the area(3-5 set locations depending on area) or directly behind you. You can interrupt Leshen when it does this by hitting it with the slinger any time you see it telegraph. This will cause Leshen to stumble before it teleports. Leshen will favor this attack during its final phase, and the time for Leshen to teleport will decrease. Leshen chains some of its attacks with the teleport during its final phase. The ones I have been able to identify are Murder of Crows and Root Line, occasionally Crow Swarm and Double Root Line. However, the most notable one is the one I had the most fun with.

Hee Hee: Leshen will only use this attack when it is in its final phase. Leshen will teleport behind you, arms outspread like it wants to give you a hug. You don't want this hug, though, as it deals moderate damage, knocks you back, and has a high chance to bleed. The telegraph is long enough for you to dodge out of the way, but the hitbox is increased due to this being the final phase, so sometimes it will look like you perfectly dodged it, but it will still hit you. I was going to name it the Hug of Death, but my brother said to call it the Hee Hee. He watched me do the fight I think the 9th time and said Hee Hee whenever Leshen did this attack. It was like the game knew, because almost every other teleport in the final phase, Leshen went for this attack!

Path: Leshen starts in area 12, as you burn its totem there. From there, it will go to the Pukei nest, area 6. From there, it will go to area 5. From there, area 4. Afterwards, it is a 60/40 chance Leshen will go to either the Coastline(area 1) or the Jagras nest(area 2), with the odds in favor of the Jagras nest. Of the 10 times I killed Leshen, it was 6 in the Jagras nest and 4 in the Coastline. Note that Leshen can actually be lured into certain areas, such as the northwest section of the Jagras nest. I figured this out when I went to sharpen, and then Leshen does a Hee Hee behind me. No Jagras, just me and Leshen. I got 2 Leshen kills by getting him here. Another place you can lure Leshen to is the Flashfly area where Great Jagras goes to sleep. Figured this out when I ran in there, the Jagras followed me, and then Leshen teleports right in front of me. I panicked and died.

Mounting: As far as I know, you can only mount Leshen once. Save it for the final phase, especially to keep Pukei alive. You will get a free knockdown so long as you hang on. When it gets knocked down, hit it with all you got on the head. Don't use the Igni sign until after Leshen gets up, as you will deny yourself head damage.

Thank you for taking the time to read this comment. I hope that all your Leshen hunts will be made better through this information. Feel free to quote me on this. As for the quest itself, I rate it 10/10. It is well designed, and the side quest to save Pukei, though a pain in the *** to complete(did it on my 9th Leshen kill), it was very heartwarming. Never killed a Pukei Pukei again. As for the Gajalaka side quest, you need to complete Gajalaka Linguistics 2 in order to do it, and you only need one doodle discovery. If you do not have this done yet, find all the Grimalkyne tribes and befriend them. The information can be found on their sites; Bugtrappers, Protectors, Troupers, and Plunderers. Do them first, then find the Gajalaka doodles around the Gajalaka spawn locations. Notable ones are the ones in area 5 in the Ancient forest, area 3 in the Rotten Vale(Watch for Odogaron, Deviljho, and Bagels!), area 8 in the Elder's Recess(Leave Dodo to snacc, watch for Jho, Azure Rathalos, and Urugaan), and area 12 in the Coral Highlands(Watch for Legiana and Bagels). Cycle between these, grab the doodles until you have 10, then talk to the lynian. He will tell you to go to the Elder's Recess in the Gajalaka camp. You have to go on an expedition to the Elder's Recess and wait until nighttime. Use the Ghillie mantle to sneak past the Gajalaka. You'll then be told to head into a shortcut, which will allow you to befriend them. This will allow you to do the Gajalaka side quest in the Leshen quest. Good luck! May the Saphirre Star light your way as you go to conquer this woodland spirit!

I was so happy when I played it on my first playthrough to see the dialog and quest line that never had in the base game, and then I got stunlock to dead by Jagras, realised that i have to do everything from scratch all over again 1/10 (got 1 from pukei-pukei tho but he died in the end)

            • Anonymous

This quest has scarred me for life. The only reason I’d ever reply is to save Pukei.

Rest in peace, my valiant ally. Your name will be remembered; the story of your sacrifice will go down forevermore in the annals of time. You will be immortalized in our tears and our grief as we strive to avenge you. Rest in peace.

DO NOT fight this f**k with the charge blade unless you are ready for a 45 minute long fight of getting knocked out of every attack

                • Be smart about when using your flame. If you burn the Leshen you get some hits for free. Gather Godbugs and Blue Mushrooms and empty your chest for some extra healing items. The scar faced Pukei is a valuable ally which can can cause poison and draws the aggression away from you. The longer it survives the better for you.

It took me 2 tries and nearly died in my last faint to beat it. Pretty fun compared to grinding but the person who thought it was a good idea to let him swing at you while right after teleporting and let him spawn the jagras should die. Unfortunately my pukei pukei instantly died because I fainted but I'm never doing it again.

Absolute trash. In tw3 we had op guarding, faster regenerating and more stunning igni, massive roll iframes. Hated this quest by heart.

It seems that as long as you keep at least 1 Jagras alive he won’t summon more. My advice: Keep at least 1 alive (you don’t have to go out of your way to; if it wants to taste blade then oblige it) and you won’t be pecked to death. Also the default swords are good enough if you are patient with your attacks.

Why the **** do we need to do the entire quest all over again from scratch, it's an awesome quest but the Leshen is an as***** and those jagras can rot in hell

Hunting Leshen is actually fun and easy. Beat him twice on two hunt. Just git gud (i use IG. Pretty light and fast to fight this thing ). But i more prefer hunting ancient leshen as i can wear my temporal mantle and set sum health boost

I thought this fight is hard especially when I want to do my killer mover those stupid jagras always get in my way. Not to mention it can have bleed effect on you. Thankfully I beaten the leshen in my second try

But can anyone recognize the moves of this beast of Satan? Only the explosion of branches is recognizable, but the wall and remote attack have the same movement. Then jagras are the most annoying and hateful thing in this world, almost more than those damn pigeons. Harder him than the nergigante and Xeno'jiiva put together

With how many times I was interrupted from healing and was bleeding from Leshen while being pecked at by the Jagras and the Revoultures, I NEVER want to fight this thing again.

This is easily the most trash fight in the game. I’m glad I first tried it, because I wasn’t about to run through this drawn out gimmick showcase a second time.

Really cool monster and the mission was a blast for me. Sad to see not everyone agrees in the comments. Here's some tips/what worked for me: - I used the chargeblade - the speed is great to evade the roots and the axes reach is great while your insignia is on cooldown - Use the insignia to burn these annoying birds. It's basically free damage with no downside. Use it. - You get a whole lot of equipment in your items and even more in the item box at base. Take a few secs to use your arsenal to the fullest. - play conservatively. CB has decent damage output anyways, you can afford to circle enemies a bit more than usual. - keep moving at all times unless your enemy is stunned/charging a slow attack / you have a 100% window. Most attacks miss you if you walk perpendicular to it. - have fun and don't stress too much, it's just a game and under stress you will play worse. I hope these help some guys.

***** this quest. It’s too long, all the Leshen does is teleport and spam the same 4 attacks. It doesn’t help that pukeis AI has a *****ing death wish or trying to kill the Jagras gets you pinballed around before the final ***** you from the tree roots carts me

                                                      • Anonymous

I 3 carted the first time using a hammer. I thought I was good with the hammer cause it was my main. But then I switched to the sword and sheild for the first time and killed him twice.

Beat him first try without carting with Lance. Still have to go back and do the Gajalaka sidequest, sadly. Fighting this thing is so annoying, feels like it goes on forever and he loves to spam the ranged moves and teleportation. grrr

                                                          • I was able to finally kill the bugger. Granted I didn’t do the Laka side mission to save time, but I had 20 minutes left at least. But I still need to go back and face him again to complete the side missions and get the armor set.

                                                            • Anonymous

I thankfully beated him in my first fight but THAT WAS HELL PAINFULL. First i went with Gerald weapon until last stage where i got tired and went for my dual blades but it didnt changed much. My biggest problem were the godamn Jagras fliching me and stopping my combos, on top of this asshole summoning the branches. It took me 47min, just after the last 3 min warning and i was tired AF and was about to give up. Then the bastard dieded and i never want to fight him anymore

                                                              • Anonymous

I heat this twiggy turd so much. My death count is 7 so far. The whole mission wound’t be so bad if I didn’t have to redo the side missions and main mission each time I get K.O.ed. I use the glaive but at the end he jumps behind me and goes Alfred Hitchcock on me. What’s funny is that pukie almost always out last me

This asshole would not die, I hammered the***** out of him like no tomorrow it literally took me 47 minutes I have NEVER taken this long not even in my noob beginnings when it tool me 20 to 25 minutes to fight big jagras

                                                                  • Anonymous

Is it me or did the slowed down cb? I felt it was too slow that I sucked as Puki kept dying, switched go Switch Axe and he went down far too easy

                                                                    • Anonymous

Any tips for taking this***** down with the light bowgun? I even went out of my way to load up on fire herb from the two plants that even grow in the Ancient Forest to be able to make more fire ammo and could not take it down

                                                                      • Anonymous
