Vaal Hazak is an Elder Dragon in Monster Hunter World (MHW).ヴァルハザク (屍套龍) in Japanese. Vaal Hazak is commonly encountered in the Rotten Vale. This creature is characterized by its skeletal appearance and is known for emitting a hazardous effluvium. The effluvium inflicts damage over time to hunters, but players can counteract its effects through specific skills, items, or by targeting particular parts of Vaal Hazak during the battle

A grotesque Elder Dragon, that inhabits the deepest part of the Rotten Vale. It uses the fatal vapor of the vale in what appears to be a symbiotic relationship.

Vaal Hazak Combat Info

  • Elemental damages: Vaal Hazak emits a fatal vapor, also called "Effluvium", which it uses to hurt its enemies.
  • Weaknesses: Vaal Hazak is weak to mhw fire damage sFire and mhw dragon damage sDragon .
  • Moderately susceptible to BlastblightBlastblight and stun iconStun.
  • Weapons with mhw eldersealElderseal cause its Miasma to dissipate for a short time.
  • Head, chest, front legs and tail are weakspots.
  • Weakness signs: As soon as the Vaal Hazak is injured enough, it starts limping. At a certain amount of damage, it starts playing dead to collect Miasma for a powerful attack.

Vaal Hazak Combat Guide

Ensure that your weapon is equipped with Fire or Dragon element, or opt for Blast or Stun if using an ailment. Select armor that prioritizes defense and elemental resistance, and always carry Mega Potions for healing during the fight. Additionally, Nullberries are crucial to counteract Vaal Hazak's gas attacks, and the Vitality Mantle can significantly reduce the damage taken.

Understanding Vaal Hazak's weak points is essential for an effective strategy. Focus your attacks on the tail, underbelly, and head, as these areas are particularly vulnerable. Depending on your weapon type, you may find that the tail, head, and legs are breakable or severable.

Tailored to your weapon choice, aim for specific areas during the battle. Sharp weapons should target the tail, blunt weapons are effective against the head, and ranged weapons can focus on either the head or tail for maximum damage output.

Vaal Hazak possesses several formidable moves that demand careful observation. One such move involves a fast forward spray of gas clouds. Sidestep to avoid the attack and capitalize on the opportunity to strike the tail or belly. When Vaal Hazak jumps away, exercise caution, as he may execute damaging moves during this time. Give him space, avoid overcommitting, and strike opportunistically.

The monster occasionally stands on its hind legs, releasing widespread gas clouds. Use Nullberries to counteract the gas effect and maintain your offensive momentum. Be mindful of a charging move where Vaal Hazak releases gas clouds around him. Retreat, use Flash Pods, or trigger your blast effect to interrupt the charge and create an opening.

During the battle, be strategic about luring Vaal Hazak into areas without gas clouds to gain a tactical advantage. Utilize the Vitality Mantle to resist the effects of gas clouds and mitigate damage during certain attacks.

The battle takes place across different areas. The first area features a small electric pool, providing opportunities for mounting using ledges. The second area is surrounded by electric water, offering additional ledges for mounting. The third area may have Girros, which can paralyze Vaal Hazak and provide openings for attacks. Finally, the last area is Vaal Hazak's nest. Exercise caution around water and use the slope of dead bodies for potential mounts.

Vaal Hazak Combat Tips

  • Combat tactics: Due to its ability to shorten your Healthbar, a meal to get your Health up to 150, Vitality gems for up to 50 more HP, and a couple of Max Potions and Nutrients would be best to take on a hunt if you want to slay this Elder Dragon.
    • Nulberries can get rid of the Effect of Miasma.
    • The above mentioned "playing dead" should be approached from behind, since after collecting enough Miasma, it will shoot out a beam in front of itself, which can sometimes be fatal. This attack can be prevented by doing enough damage to it before it can collect enough Miasma. This attack can be stopped with a flash pod.
    • Equipping 3 Miasma gems will completely negate its ability to reduce your health to half. You'll still take damage, but your health bar will remain intact.
    • In the area just outside its den, on the ceiling are two fangs suspended by vines; hitting them with a projectile will cause them to fall down. Hitting Vaal Hazak with these does a decent amount of damage, and also knocks it over.
    • Multiplayer sessions should be wary of its Miasma beam. If it detects a target far enough away from it, it may decide to use this attack. Given the beam's large area of effect and distance, it's very possible that unwary hunters may be caught up in the beam by coincidence.
      • This can also be triggered by your Palico or nearby monsters such as the Raphinos that appear just outside its lair and the Girros within, even though he is not hostile to them. Confirmed in single player and VERY close up, he just spammed the beam attack for a while, any corroboration would be appreciated.
      • In certain areas the beam can be blocked by the locale, such as a boulder or a wall
    • Stay away from acid pools, as the combination of acid damage and Miasma damage drains health very quickly.
  • Resistances: The Vaal Hazak is Immune to mhw water elemental damage sWater and has a relative high resistance to Poison, Sleep and Paralysis with only 1⭐
  • Vaal Hazak's mhw dragon damage sDragon  weakness only applies to wounded body parts while its mhw fire damage sFire weakness is always active.
  • The general tactics against Vaal Hazak is staying on its two sides (since it only has one breath ability that can attack sideways), maintaining a relatively close distance (since it has long distance reposition abilities that can put you in a position where it is impossible to be out of the line of fire of its breath), and keeping in mind that its charge abilities are (somewhat) wide and long.

I know most people will not see or care about this but a have a real interesting theories about Vaal Hazak, miasma, and it's blackveil form.

Ok so vaal Hazak lives in the deepest part of the rottenveil, now there is not a lot of info on vaal hazak, the only this that is noted is that it has a symboitic relationship with the miasma. so we need to learn more about the miasma, miasma is vapors or smells that are unpleasant and one big cause of miasma is decomposed material. The miasma is cause by the dead monsters that died in the veil which is why it is the only game with miasma as none of the other games have a grave this big. Now it is time to take about vaal hazak, vaal at first look might look like a undead dragon but looking closer you see that it just wears rotting flesh . But here is the real creepy part, vaal lower jaw is all bony and there two of them and you see bones coming out of it's body which made me think why is that. then it hit me vaal hazak is not immune to the miasma so vaal wears corpsese, it is some sort of armor to the miasma which is why you first see it in a hill of bodes. now we have not talked about blackveil at all and am getting sleepy so i'll make it fast. blackveil is the first vaal hazak that they found so it hid in the forest to hid so musrooms grew on it's body.

I beat him first try by buying a **** ton of farcasters and mega barrel bombs and using DB so I could just keep blowing him up and getting underneath him to spam attacks and using the farcasters when he does that miasma thing and just go in to the tent to recover health and just go back and repeat until he dies. It feels like a pussy thing to do, but it works lmao

I looked up on the mhw kiranico database and I guess only MR investigation gives gold crown vaal hazak? Does anyone have any idea?

in MHRise trailer, they show us a (possibly) new type of spider monster. And assuming, it seems like the hooks that the spider has, came from Vaal Hazak's claws and wingtips. i am highly sure that we will get something like Rotten Vale back in Rise

This boi is quite easy with a HBG, barely noticed the miasma damage, never needed a nulberry. Just stay at maximum range for pierce (which is out of range for his big aoe) and relocate behind him when he does his breath. His charge attack is trivial to dodge at this range, too.

              • Anonymous

Alright, as a fairly amateur Hunter, I have a few tips and warnings for those who'll face him for the first time. 1: Nullberries are a must. 2: This guy plays dirty by expanding its "Effluvia Field", and absorbing other monsters Effluvia to temporarily heal itself. 3: Don't get anxious if the battle stretches out. 4: Fire is a godsend when fighting him, so throw torchpods on the ground to chip its health, giving it a taste of its own medicine. Also, the only complaint I have when fighting this guy are its Fangs. It's a nightmare farming for them. Elder Dragons are way too resilient when it comes to breaking their parts, so Partbreaker and high Attack damage are advised to farm. Hope my humble, half-assed walkthrough helps you fighting this cancer spreading scum. :)

im not the best at fighting him, but he's not that difficult for me

Why are so many people complaining about his effluvium when you can equip 3 miasma jewels and be fully immune?

                        • Anonymous

The easiest elder Dragon in the game it's a joke fight it you know how to deal with it. I knew I could farm it after the first one.

                          • Anonymous

The most dangerous thing about this monster is neither its striking power or ability to halve your health. Its the fact that they constantly create fields that inflict unmitigated chip damage. It racks up over time (especially againtst the AT variant), and is subtle enough to forget about in the heat of the moment. It makes it so that the few hits that actually do connect much more likely to be the one that carts you.

I can and can't say this crackhead is easy, because damaging it is easy, dodging attacks? pretty annoying but do-able. but landing a true charge attack is literally impossible

From what I’ve gathered of people’s experiences, either Vaal is easy as***** for you, or it’s the literal spawn of Satan. For me it’s the spawn of satan.

Nerg was so easy, this***** is a ficking nightmare. This thing have so much broken hitboxes, high damage and health reduction. Everyone say to stay under his butt, but it get you anyway whit his unpredictable charge attack. ***** this*****.

I'm aware Elderseal weapons disperse Val's miasma aura but do fire element weapons also? I usually bring an elderseal weapon but I've played with fire a couple of times and it seems like it also represses the miasma. When you shoot slinger torch ammo on the ground it disperses the miasma so I thought there might be a relation.

i always wondered if the Acid Water affects him, i drag him to the acid water (the Glowy Shiny blue water) and run around the pool shooting. maybe it helps but as a Hunter walking in the hazard myself, it feels like 5HP drains per second in the pool of water

I just beat this guy and honestly I'm astounded by how easy this guy was compared to the other elder dragons. Teostra kept exploding the map, Kushala was highly annoying to hit, but this guy was just "roll under belly and wack it till it dies"

Vaal hazak is immune to dragon WHILE unwounded, not while wounded. You have your info backwards on that section.

the wings do damage when he does a jump attack. THE WINGS! Then I block all of his attacks just fine only to be one shotted by one of his rush moves (I stay behind him!) or his miasma burbs (shield up...). Why exactly when it is 99 times no problem at all? Nobody knows... I can handle him fine now, got everything I need from him but these random sudden deaths totaly out of the blue are a bit annoying tbh.

RE: Fangs. Using HBG Spreadshots and shooting entirely at his face [and nowhere else], even after head breaks + using Legiana 2 piece set [extra rewards] + being on an investigation managed to net me a fang on almost every kill. No clue how a melee user would be able to reliably farm them. It was slow and tedious but I was able to get about 5 per hour.

                                                        • Anonymous

This page makes Vaal seem so much more threatening than it actually is. I just took a lvl 1 dragonbone bow and it did the job. It's miasma "beam" attack is the only thing you need to watch out for and it is very telegraphed. When he is about to do it run behind him and fire a couple dragon piercers from its tail to its head and just spam your shots get that elderseal proc'd on him. Take max potions, null berries, and such, and make sure you eat the first go around. It is stupid simple.

Best way I've seen is hit his head as much as possible when he turns around and go crazy on him when he has no gas left or when he is getting gas. Killed him in 16 minutes, 10 seconds, used a lot of nulberries and potions

Having just 1 level is immensely helpful when you heal yourself or others heal you. Keep everyone alive, and ohana.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Assuming his weapons are any indication he naturally deals Dragon Element, which ironically is one of 2 elements he's weakest against. Equip Dragon Res jewels (+20 & bonus +10 def) and take a veggie meal (15) in the canteen. It helps a lot if you have a build that starts out with a positive Dragon Res value.

When Arch Tempered Kirin was around, I made sure to have my Thunder Res above 40. At that point his 2 insane charged-up lightning bolt attacks stopped 1-shotting me, taking only about 40% of my HP. The same principle should apply to Vaal Hazak's elemental attacks.

                                                                      • Anonymous

What type of damage is his breath attack? His Arch-Tempered version is so damn strong with it, how can i lower the damage?

                                                                        • Anonymous

Took him out with Legiana armor. It helps keep your damage to a minimum fairly often and also would help you farm for the fangs with its luck boost. Especially great for mounters with an addition of increased air attack.

                                                                          • Anonymous

I tried great sword, but I'm hitting the armored legs too much. Didn't make it in time. Small one, stick to the chest. Fire element or dragon. Be very aggressive. Took him down w one min and 9 seconds to spare.

                                                                            • Anonymous

How long does it take to shatter this thing 's head? I've been going at it so many times and never have I broken it. I'm using dual blades but might switch to hammer.

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

Why are people incapable of fighting this guy... just stay as close to him as possible, so he doesn’t use his death laser. Preferably behind. Even as a bow user I know to stay close.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Please reply and say what you think would be better because I'm about to fight Zorah for the second time and I can keep going after the Anjanath when I want. I'm not going for a speedrun I just want to find out what would work better. So please reply what would be better.

Would the Anjanath dual blades upgraded as far as possible be a good setup? Because with my dual blades experience (I only started MH from MH3U) you need to be very close to hit stuff and with the risk of the Miasma I'm wondering if I should use a bow or bowgun.

                                                                                      • fucker is easy to kill, easiest of all elders imo. farming his fangs on other hand is a PAIN UP THE FUCKIN ASS!! 25 kills for 3 fangs, with 4 different weapons focussing his fucking shitface. I AM NOT AMUSED CAPCOM! >.<

When the hunter gets blighted by it (health halved) and Hazak does that move where it sucks up the smoke from the surrounding Girros (killing them in the process) it also kills the hunter.
