Poison Smoke Bomb is an Item in Monster Hunter World (MHW). It allows a Hunter to trigger Poison effects on Monsters.

Releases a toxic cloud of mist when used. Also popular as a household bug bomb.

Poison Smoke Bombs can be used from the Item Bar while in the field to briefly produce a cloud of poisonous smoke at the Hunter's feet. When a Monster is standing in this cloud, they will continually receive buildup towards the Poison Status Effect. The poison cloud lasts for five seconds.

Each full duration of a poison cloud causes about 2.5x as much buildup as Poison Ammo 1. For reference, this should be five instances of buildup from a Blademaster Weapon that wields about 400 Poison Damage against a Poison-neutral Monster.

A Monster's resistance to Poison will modify the effectiveness of Poison Smoke Bombs as follows:

  • Resistance to Poison (⭐) will require 2.5 full-duration Bombs to trigger once, then another 3.75 to trigger again
  • Neutrality to Poison (⭐⭐) will require 2 Bombs, then another 3
  • Weakness to Poison (⭐⭐⭐) will require 1.5 Bombs, then another 2.25

Additionally, the effects of Poison Smoke Bombs are modified by the Poison Attack Skill.

See Status Effects for more information on how Status buildup works.

In addition to their use as Poison traps for Large Monsters, Poison Smoke Bombs can also be used against Vespoids and Hornetaurs to incapacitate them without destroying their bodies.

    • a sleeping monster won't be woken up by poison buildup or poison ticks, so it can be used like mega barrel bombs. it also has no knockback and is easier to setup. from one instance of poison, a monster will take 160, 320, or 520 damage with a 1, 2, or 3 star poison rating, respectively. the real difficult part is figuring out how many bombs you need to apply a poison status. in exact terms, the poison bomb does 5 ticks (1 per second) that each cause 32 poison buildup, for a total of 160 poison buildup per bomb.

while poison damage depends on the poison star rating of the monster, the buildup values vary for each monster. for example, ruiner nergigante has a 150 initial buildup for poison as a 2-star, but uragaan who takes significantly more poison damage than any other 3-star monster, has a initial buildup of 180. there is no cooldown on poison cloud ticks on a monster, so you can spam 2 back-to-back if you know you need 2.

you can check specific monster thresholds on each of their pages on this wiki, thoroughly investigated and graciously provided by AsteriskAmpersand, Deathcream and MoonBunnie. just also note that multiplayer will change buildup thresholds drastically, and the values provided are singleplayer only.
