Critical Boost is a Skill in Monster Hunter World (MHW).
Critical Boost Effect
Critical Boost is increased in level based on the amount of Equipment with this skill the hunter is using. Each level works as follows:
Level 1: Increases damage dealt by critical hits to 130%- Level 2: Increases damage dealt by critical hits to 135%
- Level 3: Increases damage dealt by critical hits to 140%
A critical hit normally increases the raw damage of your attacks by 125%. With this skill, the bonus raw damage from critical attacks is increased to 130/135/140% instead.
This skill only applies to raw damage. For elemental damage, see Critical Element and True Critical Element.

im ok with just having 1 jewel for it, don't want to burn 2 more slots just to get 10% more crit boost..

i fight low level tempered monsters at mr so long, never see 1 jewel.

If you have a choice between weakness exploit and critical boost: critical boost wins. It may not seem apparent at first, but the extra damage wins out and adds up more than without it. That is unless you had horrible luck. Plus you can just bring an affinity booster for the 50% affinity.

Does anybody know how this affects negative affinity? Surely it's not "now does 40% less damage"?

There's no mistranslation, just an awkward, poorly worded one. Saying you set it to 130% is no different from saying you increase it by 5%, people just misunderstood it since it doesn't reference criticals doing 125% of your base damage already. Also, even with that confusion, in no way does "increases damage dealt" imply it affects your affinity, so i'm not sure why that's even in the note.
Is not "by 30%", but "at 30%.
Wrong traduction from jap version.
"A critical hit normally increases the raw damage of your attacks by 125%. With this skill, the bonus raw damage from critical attacks is increased to 130/135/140% instead." is incorrect. It needs to be either "[...] of your attacks to 125%." or "[...] of your attacks by 25%." and either the "bonus" needs to be removed or the numbers adjusted to "30/35/40".
