Eat or be Eaten in Monster Hunter World (MHW) mhw-iceborne-icon-16pxIceborne is an Observation Log. Observation Logs are given by the Lynian Researcher located in Seliana which requires a Hunter to capture different photos for him.

They say fishing brings peace and tranquility to a person's heart, and surely Plunderers are no strangers to this sensation, which explains why they can sometimes be seen angling at night. I do hope they are aware that fishing during acid rain is extremely dangerous, for it brings out the larger and more aggressive creatures of the deep...

Eat or be Eaten Notes

  • There's a couple different animation sets for the cat fishing, the one you want is when the cat reels a very large fish, which causes big waves and splashes before diving then surfacing and eating the cat. Taking the photo at any point during the struggle reeling in the large fish awards the gold.
  • To easily cycle through the animation sets, you can travel back to camp then return to the photo spot and it will reset the animation cycle, so you can reroll for the big fish animation.
  • It suffices to take a photo of the cat fishing for silver award.

I have found that I get 1 chance to catch this animation around the middle of the night cycle. I found no success with resetting the "animation" cycle since once the appropriate animation plays, the cat does not repeat it as it has been eaten.

No need to reset for this photo by going back to camp. Just wait until the reeling struggle is more intense than usual with a bunch of movement and splashes, and take a photo when that's happening.

Just acquired this photo. I noticed there was a longer period of idle time between him fishing up a dud and reeling in the big boy compared to the time in between the rest, so if you're waiting a while and notice that the Felyne is just standing there -- there's your moment to prepare to take your photos. There's also much more extra splashing when he has the big fish on the line compared to the duds or smalls. I had to wait around 8 minutes for the photo opportunity, no Ghille Mantle.

          • Took me ages to get this... probably because I'd spent so long looking through the camera and waiting for the big fish that night expired and dawn arrived without my realising. In the end I changed map expeditions until the notification for Acid Rain showed in the Rotten Vale, then spent my time randomly beating up monsters and exploring until night time before transitioning over there (as opposed to waiting in the Rotten Vale itself until night). That worked out for me.

I came to this a bit late and found the cat halfway through being eaten by a big fish, but didn't have enough time to take a picture. I came back again later and it had reset, but the cat wasn't fishing up any big fish again and just fished up nothing over and over until I left. It's possible you can't get the big fish to appear if you aren't wearing Ghillie Mantle when you enter the zone - you also need to be quick to catch the shot in time. If anyone else was able to get all three conditions on this, please tell me how.
