Observation Logs in Monster Hunter World Iceborne (MHW) are research requests in which the Lynian Researcher in Seliana provides Hunters with requests that require capturing a total of 20 photos of various Grimalkyne, Gajalaka, and Boaboa performing specific actions. Successfully completing the listed research requests will grant players with both the "Fledging Observer" and the "Outstanding Observer" Trophy/Achievement. You can find the Lynian Researcher at the Lynian Observatory right in front of the Round Table Room in Seliana. Upon talking to him for the first time, he provides Hunters with a camera.
Observation Logs Important Notes
Here are a few notes to remember after speaking to the Lynian Researcher and before heading out:
- To identify which specific area you'll need to capture a photo, you'll find a Grimalkyne, Gajalaka, or Boaboa Tribe symbol marked on your map.
- For some photos, there are various conditions that need to be met in order to successfully capture the shot:
- A specific time of a day
- A specified weather condition
- The level of the Tribe must be leveled up high enough
- Most observations which are marked with the surveyor symbol next to the palico icon revolve around capturing some specific set of animations out of a couple variants in order to register gold completion. For silver or below, any animation suffices. When going for gold, if a specific animation set (e.g. coral orchestra successfully completing a rehearsal) does not play, the animation set chosen by the game can be reset by simply travelling to camp and back to re-roll the animation.
- If you have already submitted a bronze or silver photo for a certain Observation Log, the surveyor symbol for that observation will stop appearing on your map. In this case you will have to manually check the spawning points to find it again.
- Some observations have to be made in combat. If the animation relates to a tribe's trapping ability, the correct pair of tribe and location must be present (e.g. For A Big Catch, you must record the Plunderers trapping a large monster in the Rotten Vale.)

My observation log is glitched. I have them all completed with 3 stars but I only have 24 slots. The last 6 are still locked.

How do you unlock the last 2 observation logs? (23 and 24 at the time of writing) I know where the pictures can be taken but the actual objectives/logs are not unlocked yet. (I only have 1 to 22) Does anyone know how you unlock the last 2 assignments?

Is there anything that should be causing your observations to delete after some time? It is the second time it has happened where I go to take a picture of something, move to the next picture only to see there is not one. All of them are deleted. My submitted ones are not reset, but sometimes I just see something I want a picture of. Maybe they could add a "photo album" decoration for your room, where you can "upload" pictures you've taken and want to save. Be interesting to visit another players room and see the pictures they think are worth keeping.

Sorry but this stuff is moronic at best. Good luck taking a picture of a gajalaka tossing a molotov mid-combat while they fling paralysis knives and other random objects at you. It's more frustrating than fun and whoever thought this was a good idea needs to be bonked on the head and fired.

Cant for one reason. Take pics in the selina ghub any ideas?

For anyone having trouble with the just added observations, namely the "Viper's Banquet" one or some such, you have to take the picture technically after it has taken its bites, so when it's looking up but not when its actually eating it. If you wait till it turns into "shredded flesh" you're too late. Despite 10 pictures I took with it facing me, not one of them counted as "1 subject not from behind". It is *just* as it raises its head from the last bite.

I haven't been able to do these missions because it won't let me talk to the guy

Can't actually talk to him for some reason. Never talked to him in iceborne actually, because it didn't let me c:
