Howling at the Moon in Monster Hunter World (MHW) 
Iceborne is an Observation Log. Observation Logs are given by the Lynian Researcher located in Seliana which requires a Hunter to capture different photos for him.
Some researchers have observed Zinogre Howling at the moon atop the giant rocks in the western part of the Ancient Forest. Use your map to check the location, avoid conflict, and get a shot of its face.

Howling at the Moon Notes
- Capture Zinogre Howling at the moon IS NOT required to get the Celestial Wyverian Print. Observation Logs have 3 Tiers of completion, each with their own rewards. Howling at the moon is the Third Tier of requirement, while the Celestion Wyverian Print is the Second Tier reward.
- The Event Quest "The Wrath of Thunder Descends" has a Tempered Zinogre appear on the Ancient Forest. A good option to complete this Log.
So i was very very unlucky on this one and had to learn a good bit I'd like to add:
1, if you wait around at area 1 during the quest he will NOT ever show up, I had originally attempted this strat about 10 times
2. Finding then following him around will end up leading him to the rock, usually behind he doesnt aggro BUT there are a couple paths where he does 180. That being said my last attempt which was successful took 15 minutes (that long because i accidentally got in combat and had to wait for rest of ghillie cd otherwise he wouldnt leave the current area)

This is on the narrow path north from Area 1 to Area 9, at the far north of Area 1 right before the area boundary. Look at the rock pillars to the west, that spawned monsters use as a path to get from Area 9 to Area 1.
If there's a Zinogre currently spawned and it's night time, it might stop on those pillars for a bit as it meanders around the map. Mine sat there looking around for a bit before getting around to howling.
I can confirm that the tempered one from the "Wrath of Thunder Descends" event quest does this, but starting the quest at dawn is maybe not the best idea since almost the whole clock is used up by the time it's late enough at night.

so I'm having some trouble getting the pictures I'm taking to register, they all have him mid howl but for some reason they just don't register to the researcher. do I have to get a clear shot with the moon in the background or what? if there's any advice you guys could give t would be appreciated

does this photo require a zinogre spawn in the ancient forest?
Howling at the moon IS NOT required to get the Celestial Wyverian Print, that's the Tier 3 requirement, and the Celestial Wyverian Print is only in Tier 2. It only has to be large as possible and not from behind
