"Layered Weapon" is added in Monster Hunter World Iceborne (MHWI) as an Augmentation option that allows you to customize your weapon's appearance, without changing their actual stats. See Layered Armor for armor equivalent.
To unlock the option to layer weapons for the first time, you must:
- open the Tundra region in The Guiding Lands by following the Special Assignment quest chain starting with Sterling Pride.
- gather materials in The Guiding Lands (ore, bones and etc.)
Notes:
- This type of customization has no effect on performance.
- Only weapons that are at the end of their Master Rank upgrade tree can be layered.
- Changing your weapon's appearance in layered weapon menu will take precedence over anything set in the Custom Upgrades menu.
- You can change or remove the layer from weapons at the Smithy at any time, and the materials used for the layer are returned to you. Research points will not be returned.
- The layer will stay on the specific weapon until you choose to remove it. It is not affected by your Layered Armor or saved Loadout settings.
- Different weapon types have different layered options. For example, because no actual Great Jagras Longsword exists in the game, there is no layered option for that either.
- Safi'jiiva weapons cannot be awakened further if they are augmented with Layered Weapons. You need to remove the layer while upgrading.
- Alatreon and Fatalis weapons are so far the only weapons that require you to first craft and upgrade the actual weapon before unlocking the layered version of it. For every other weapon it is enough that you have the materials for the layer itself.

- You must have progressed far enough in the story to unlock the tundra region in the Guiding Lands before the "Layered Weapons" option is unlocked.

Anyone know how to unlock this? No tutorials or options are showing up for me to layer my weapons. I watched a video about layered weapons, but it doesn't explain how to unlock the option. Do you need to be a certain MR? Reach a certain mission in Iceborne? Can only layer certain weapons? Thanks for any help/information :)
I have the materials to craft Rathian parts on my iron base longsword but it doesn't show up. Help?
