Free Elem/Ammo Up is a Skill in Monster Hunter World (MHW).
Free Elem/Ammo Up Effect
Free Elem/Ammo Up is increased in level based on the amount of Equipment with this skill the hunter is using. Each level works as follows:
Level 1: Draws out 33% of hidden element and expands magazine size for some ammo
Level 2: Draws out 66% of hidden element and expands magazine size for more ammo
Level 3: Draws out 100% of hidden element and expands magazine size for most ammo
Free Element only affects melee weapons and bows with hidden element. Hidden element is displayed as greyed out and within brackets (example: "Paralysis (180)" ) as long as Free Elem/Ammo Up is not equipped.
Using any amount of Free Elem/Ammo Up on a weapon with hidden element negates the effect of Non-Elemental Boost.
Ammo Up increases the ammo loaded to the bowgun's magazine by one or two shots depending on the starting size of the magazine. If the ammo capacity is four or less then the capacity will be increased by one, five or more and the capacity will be increased by two.
Ammo Up works for bowguns with Auto-Reload but it will still reload after every shot.
Here is a table for what skill level affects each ammo type:

This skill for blademasters (and bows) took a hit in MHW. The balance between raw vs element is not to reward, it's to get even. So if the best you can hope for when exploiting element weakness is to do as much damage as a super strong weapon that has no element, then why invest in this skill? I don't know if monster hunter had always been like this, but exploiting elemental weaknesses should be rewarding. Getting even is not a reward.

Tested this with Rathbuster II and Fate's Ember LBGs to see if the clip size expand gets better with each rank of the skill. Tested on PC. Numbers are (no skill - Lvl1 Free Elem - Lvl2 Free Elem - Lvl3 Free Elem) Rathbuster Normal R1 (4-5-5-5) R2 (4-4-5-5) R3 (2-2-2-3) Pierce R1 (3-4-4-4) R2 (2-2-3-3) R3 (2-2-2-3) Spread R1 (3-4-4-4) Sticky R1 (2-3-3-3) Recover R1 (3-3-4-4) Poison R1 (6-6-8-8) Flaming (3-3-3-4) Slicing (2-2-2-3) Demon (2-2-2-3) Tranq (2-2-2-3) Fate's Ember Normal R1 (4-5-5-5) R2 (3-3-4-4) Pierce R1 (5-7-7-7) R2 (2-2-3-3) R3 (2-2-3-3) Spread R1 (3-4-4-4) R2 (2-2-3-3) Sticky R1 (2-3-3-3) Poison R1 (5-5-7-7) Paralyze R1 (4-4-5-5) Sleep R1 (5-5-7-7) Exhaust (4-4-5-5) Thunder (4-4-4-5) Slicing (1-1-1-2) Demon (1-1-1-2) Tranq (2-2-2-3) Might test a couple HBGs later. If anyone has different results feel free to post and correct.

Doesn't feel like it's worth having for the majority of ammos due to low efficiency. are there weapons where it's close to a 20% increase in dps?
- Anonymous
The best weapons don't have hidden element, so this is kinda useless. Better spend that slot on something more useful, like handicraft of earplugs

This skill is one that truly wasn't meant for world's skill system imo

you don't understand how decorations (gems) work then, its a gem that requires a level 3 gem SLOT; the gem itself is only a 1 level boost up to that skill (any skill). This game has a lot of bad bugs to it but what you are suggesting is not one of them.
Reason it requires a level 3 slot is because it is a stronger ability than say, defence gem or attack gem.

there is a bug with a level 3 gem with this ability! it gives only level 1 unlike 3...
Highly recommended for Heavy Bowgun builds, if you wish to eschew reloading during battle and unload as many ammo as you can, then this skill is the best for you.

I’ve only seen it on dual blades. The element damage is greyed out. Say thunder for 120 damage. If you have no item you don’t do any thunder. If you have a lvl 1 item you only get 30% of the thunder so damage of 40, and etc etc as you go up

What exactly is a hidden element and what quantifiable real numbers can we expect from these percentages?
- Anonymous
my question is how much ammo at each level and of what kind
