Elder’s Recess worked well for me. Got 3 in about an hour (really two since my ps4 decided to spit out the disk after catching the first). Guess since there’s so many gastodon it helps your chances.

Just when I finally got one, testing my sanity, the gajalakas gave me 2 in a row from pawswap trading.

It showed up 2 times on the mosswine back from area 3/5 in the Vale during some assigned quests (I don't remember which was the first one aside from being a pre-Iceborne quest, but tbe second was the Acidic Glavenus one) and both times I've lost it thanks to Radobaan and Hornetaur.

A couple of years later and after 2 goddamn days actively hunting for it and trying different methods, I can confirm that fast traveling back and forth from camp 1 and pawswap area made one spawn on the mosswine in the Plunderer's Lair (area 15). Also, I had Zoomaster active and Ghilie mantle equipped while fast traveling. It was an expedition; clear weather, day time.

On the first day, I spent my whole free time running back and forth both mosswines, while avoiding the freaking ebony dog/acidic glavy and the day forward, I kept fast traveling between camps, both to no avail.

Today, I've decided to go directly to Pawswap and it spawned on the 4th fast travel to Pawswap.

Here's what I did/planned to do:

1. Equip Ghillie.
2. Fast travel to Pawswap.
3. Check pig for fluffly ball.
4. Fast travel to Camp 1.
5. Immediately fast travel back to Pawswap.
6. Repeat from 3 until Ghillie wears off.
7. Wait for Ghillie's cooldown and do it all over again. (It actually spawned on the 4th travel to Pawswap, like I said, before Ghillie even reached half of timer)

Looked for this little bastard for hours, no luck.
Then I played "Mr. Blue Sky" by Electric Light Orchestra and found him right away in the Rotten Vale, gold crown size no less! 100% works every time just gotta BLAST that 70s music.
(I wrote this comment to mock some of the ridiculous suggestions for finding this bird but uh, also this did happen to me, so.)

You can find it 100% on the mission that the alchemist give to you, where you have to kill 15 vespoid and 20 hornetaur

Found one when fighting tigrex, but F**king tigrex killed the mosswine :(

I've heard that these guys can spawn in the Ancient Forest, but they are difficult to find. Is this true?

Tried farming for an hour and I gave up. During A Fiery Convergence quest I found one on the back of a gastodon in area 11. Almost died for this bird.

Me just only knowing one definite spawn location which is the one riding the mosswine behind the goldenfish pond at area 15 of rotten vale

just in case this helps anyone: i was listening for the same chirp as the downy crake. these make weird, weird noises that are different than bird chirps. lol. but i've caught one on a kestodon in the recess and one in the honey cave in rotten vale so far, the rotten vale one was during the acidic glavy mission and the recess one was just on an exp during sunrise iirc

I just caught one of these for the first time and it was a giant gold crown, so thats epic. I named him Manuel.

I actually heard a Bristly Crake chirp while I was near some Gastodons in the Guiding Lands!

Some advanced players told me to get all the cooking ingredients, then you can always get zookeeper buff from group vouchers in tbr canteen. Its took me over 10 attempts, but I found on rotten vale

With iceborne is there really any trick to increase your chances? Any special event quest or new route? I'm just curious, something similar to the grandfather magrel downy crake quest.

I've spend about 5 hours jumping between Rotten & Recess ( in expedition) without any success, however, after midnight I tried 4 times the optional quest "Lavasion, Monster of lava" 7* and the first 2 had the bird in the same group of Gastodon. There might be a limited number of birds you can see per day.

It can also spawn on the Raider Ride Gastodon that can be summoned in the Recess, just happened to me

All you are just lucky so far that little ahole nowhere to be seen and allready spent multiple hours teleporting, returning afking. This is pure rng bull*****and I everybody else who is fked by it.

I got mine from Rotten Vale because it got stuck on the wall. I didnt even know of its existence, so I thought "The hell is that noise?" and saw this ball of fur (or more like feathers) spazzing out.

After spending several hours trying the AFK method in Elder's Recess, and quick traveling between camps in Rotten Vale, I finally found one in area 15 of the Vale. What worked for me was checking both Mosswine in Rotten Vale on an Expedition, leaving and repeating. Found it on my third go with this method.

You can also get a Bristly Crake from the Plunderers due to the new pawsapping mechanic added in Iceborne. While pawswapping keep an eye on which Grimalkyne you're trading with because the one with the most eratic movment usually give the rarest item.

Can be found in the guiding lands area 12 on the backs of soldier crabs. Also can be rewarded via pawswap

Finally had one spawn in for me in the area of the Vale with the tree trap for the first time since the game came out and as soon as I got close enough to catch it, a bug decided to tackle the moss swine it was on. I had been searching for this one bird for about 9 months now and needless to say, I am slightly upset.

Had zero luck in the rotten vale after a couple of hours. Tried the elders recess, first group of gastodon I came to, ghillie mantle and palico along too.

Just got this and the living fossil today. The living fossil was actually my second one as I had to do it again for the expedition quest. I'm glad it's finally over, lol.

If the trophy isn't atop the first mosswine you check, simply walk away and do some gathering in the same area; 20-30 seconds later, return and there should be a better chance of the bird sitting atop it's host.

I found one literally on top of the mosswine and it stayed there as the mosswine moved through the crawl tunnel, near camp 1. Area 3/5 in Rotten Vale

So i just managed to get 5 of these in a few hours while trying to find a petricanth in the vale. Still haven't found a petricanth...

I've seen 3 times already today and got in the 3rd time. My advice is to search for him midhunt, find the monster and beat it down to capture range and go search for him. Keep switching between camps to respawn. 3 times in one day lmao, while in expeditions searching for this thing I've tried for days and couldn't find one. Don't know for sure if this way is more easy but again....3 times in one day.

I saw one on the mosswine by the first camp in Rotten Vale

I caught this one by mere coincidence in the Rotten Vale, think in zone 3 where the mosswine is. The funny thing is, it got stuck trying to fly away, so I had all the time in the world to get the capture net and catch it as it continued to fly into a wall.

Found one in Rotten Vale, zone 3, on the mosswine lurking near the tunnel on the south of the zone.

Found one on the back of a gastodon and they immediately aggro'd but then I came back around and got close enough to pet all of the gastodons and no aggro like come on game.

I just captured it by accident at rotten vail. I sat at the ledge fishing when I noticed bird chriping. When I turned the camera I was forking standing on ut while it freaked out.
The funny thing is 1 minute before I caught one of those anchient fish in the same area, so two extremely rare pets spawned for me in the same instance. How lucky am I?
