Rathalos (aka Liolaeus) is a Large Monster in Monster Hunter World (MHW). リオレウス (火竜) in Japanese.

The apex monster of the Ancient Forest, also known as the "King of the Skies".
A fierce wyvern that descends upon invaders, attacking with its venomous claws and fiery breath.

Rathalos Details & Locations

Known as the 'King of the Skies' and the apex predator of the Ancient Forest, Rathalos is a formidable wyvern that fiercely defends its territory from invaders, employing venomous claws and fiery breath in its attacks.

These large, bipedal creatures boast a spiny, armored hide adorned with brighter, more vibrant colors than their female counterpart, Rathian. The predominant red hue, coupled with black markings, gives Rathalos a striking appearance. Possessing a flame sac, Rathalos can unleash deadly flaming projectiles from its mouth. Its talons are highly poisonous, capable of inflicting toxic wounds on larger prey. The thick tail features a spiked club, and the wing membranes showcase ornate patterns likely intended for attracting potential mates.

Rathalos Combat Info

  • Bites and tail swipes at close range, inflicting mhw poison status effect sPoison status.

  • Kinsect Extract:
    • Red: Head, Neck
    • Orange: Body, Back, Left Leg, Right Leg
    • White: Left Wing, Right Wing
    • Green: Tail
  • Hunters can sever the tail and break the head, wings and body.
  • The tail, head and wings are the weak points.
  • Rathalos prefers to stay airborne to unleash their myriad attacks, but a well-placed flash bomb or a shot from your Slinger can send them crashing to earth. Wounding their wings gives them a moment of vulnerability whenever they try to take flight.
  • Master Rank Changes:
    • Flashing him in midair will only knock him down for a few seconds. He continues to charge blind across the arena, making him very hard to pin down. A Slinger Burst in Midair works better.
    • He spends more time enraged and shoots more fire.
    • His Fire and his poison deal more damage.

Ensure you have adequate Fire Resistance and a generous supply of Antidotes, or Poison Resistance. Rathalos utilizes his talons for poisoning, a departure from Rathian's tail. Carry Flash Pods to interrupt his aerial maneuvers.

Rathalos is an agile flier, but his airborne assaults can be grounded with Flash Pods. Exploit this vulnerability by bringing him down, focusing on head attacks, and repeating the process. Attacking his tail mid-flight is also effective, and severing it compels him to land

flies 90% of the time on master rank but it have tolerance to flashbangs so we cant take it down from the skies without burning all of the flashbugs...

Is it just me or do you guys think Rathaboy should have his own theme? I say as the flagship of the series he should. Maybe just give him the forest and hills theme from MHFU! Idk but something for him! But that’s just me lol

Can we add the fact "Rathalos can call for Rathians to assist him in combat" to the combat tips? I feel like it's a bit important information for new comers.

          • Anonymous

for what reason did they think removing the SOLE counterplay to it's constant flying was a good idea at MR?

            • Anonymous

Easy, but extremely annoying. GET OUT THE ****ING SKY ALREADY. the master rank flash resistance just makes it 10x worse. That's a 3/10 rating from me.

                Worst monster in the game.

                    The Ballad of Rathalos

                    Wyvern of fire and sky
You might to daunting for those who try
                    You inspire fear and hate
For others have tried their fate
                    But your fall grows near
O how the Hunters hear your roar
For most it is an ancient noire
For Hunters will not stop till they see you gored

I swear the Rathalos took me literally WEEKS to slay. I guess that's what you get when you fight the monster hunter mascot

                      • A lot of lower rank players keep saying that he is annoying, a easier way to deal with his flying is to get your Palico the Flashfly cage, Go on a expedition, and find doodles, Once you get 3 small doodles and 3 large doodles you can follow the scoutflies to a cat, just follow it and you will get the flashfly cage.

                        • Anonymous

I find this guy very annoying also, flying off to all parts of the map. Fast travelling to the closest camp doesn't always work either, as sometimes i get to his new location and he just takes off again back to the other side of the map. The fight itself is reasonable, unless you have the Rathian join in then it can be a pain. Flash Pods are the best thing to bring him to ground then you just hammer the hell out of him.

                          • Anonymous

Every time I fight Rathalos, at the end where it sleeps at its nest, there is always a Rathian waiting for me and they both gang up on me for a while, then Rathalos leaves the locale. How am I supposed to kill it then?

                            • Anonymous

I finally came up with a good joke, alright here it goes... paRATHA the rapper. (If anyone didn't get that then... I wouldn't blame you its old...)

Someone thought that Monster Hunter World copied the Rathalos from another game created in 1994! That’s a 10000% LIE!! :/

                                • Anonymous

guy's a ***** to deal with as a melee if you don't have flash pods; with flash pods, this guy's easy as piss, and as ranged, he's an absolute joke

                                  • Anonymous

If your having trouble with a Rathalos when he is flying just run around him in circles. If you got a flashpod use it to bring him to the ground and clip his wings, it'll make him be vulnerable for a short time when he takes off again.

                                    • Anonymous

You can bait it into hitting a dam in the best and then flash pod it to send it tumbling to the bottom layer, giving you an opening.

                                      • Anonymous

Lot of complaints about the map and him changing location. First off, scout bugs. They don't always opt for the fastest route but they do help so long as you remember to tag the target using your map. Second, he has a pattern. The pattern may differ from person to person but it definitely has a pattern. For me this pattern starts at the nest then moves straight down (use the ramp opposite the camp and drop right on his back) then over to the platform in sector 14, after that I usually have him hurt enough he flees back to his nest.

Super ultra f**king irritating annoying monster ever!!! Can't freaking solo him with all the appropriate amour, amourskin ,demondrug, thunder, 10 potion, 10 mega, 10 life, 1 ancient pill, etc and still couldn't bring him down. WORST OF ALL. PAID FOR THIS GAME AND THE FREAKING SESSION KEEPS DISCONNECTING AND IT BECOMES MULTIPLE PLAYER DIFFICULTY. HOW THE HECK CAN WE CONTINUE THIS!!!!

He is more annoying compared to Diablos. I have just finished the quest where I had to hunt Rathian and Rathalos. Rathian was easy, but Rathalos was a pain. He always interfered with the fight, and when it was his turn, he often chose to fly to a tight space where dodging is difficult. This is the most annoying part.

I’m so angry why is he’s hammer not in the game he hammer is one of the coolest hammers in mh3u it made rath sound wen it hit

They should delete this monster. I thought the Ajanath was bull*****But this one takes the *****ing cake. Poison spam, fire spam, constant harrassment, has the *****ing habit of flying for way too long, making any kind of melee weapon pretty much useless, is too fast for his size, bull*****hitboxes, even more bull*****chain insta kill comboes where I get stunned 3 times in a row and just thrown around to 0 hp without being able to do a single thing, not even attempt to dodge. He literally just chain comboed me 2 times in a *****ing row. I can't even keep up with him. Spamming boosters and healing zones is worthless when he just doesn't *****ing relent. Rarely gets tired unlike it's female counterpart. The map he spawns on is a *****ing nightmare since he can just fly away indefinately while you battle with the goddamn terrain just trying to reach him, only to have him fly away at the opposite part of the map. Literally I spend more time chasing him than fighting him, he is almost piss-brain easy if he wasn't so goddamn zealous. He literally doesn't let up sometimes. You can spam dodge all you want, unless you have a dash elixir - you will run out of stamina and he will hit you then. Probably chain you afterwards and then good luck finding him again kid. I honestly don't know what's worse about him - his never ending endurance, the absolutely insane damage he can deal to you EVEN WITH APPROPRIATE GEAR. I have a fire resistance set and this guy can still hit me for around half my HP with a blast.

                                                • Anonymous

Tip to chase rathalos. Let him come to you. He has a bad habit of changing locations very quickly. Better to wait. Or if you do pursue, make use of fast travel between camps, compete w his speed by teleport. Tip, he usually spawns in his nest. Begin the mission in the nearest camp and you can usually find him before he leaves.

                                                  • Anonymous

Fucking ancient forest map is a nightmare to traverse, i had a Rathalos wounded and everytime i get up to where hes nesting, he gets up and fucking leaves and eventually despawned on me because trying to find my way up to him is a colossal pain in the ass. the map is pointless

                                                    • Anonymous

Is it normal to break every part off a rathalos and kill him with a landslide all with a odogaron charge blade? Cause I did that and man it was satisfying...

                                                      • Anonymous

Is it normal in the game to be able to walk up to Rathian and Rathalos without them attacking. I mean, I sat in the damn nest with Rathalos and he just sat there nesting with me??? My boyfriend says it's because they like me. XD

                                                        • Anonymous

flash pods for melee and/or a good bow/light bow gun wielder, alone is pretty easy as he doesnt combo much, Using a tobi-ka-dachi bow at max rarity shoot him in the wings when he flies up, usually will trip him up and bring him down on his head. Keep stamina up and get ready to roll(ALOT!).

This fight is about keeping moving, and keeping clear of those talons, fire isnt too bad, but those talons hurt.

So I ran into this guy when I was in the middle of hunting the Anjanath. I wounded him, then it ran away up into the trees straight into this *****er. My plan after pushing my jaw back up was to kill the winner...that plan backfired and I got curb-stomped.

I cut off his tail and he left the world, and his cut-off tail despawned with him while I was harvesting it.

                                                                • Anonymous

I've found that when using a heavy bowgun against Rathalos, Rathian and Diablos use the slicing ammo for headshots, wings and even the tail. It's so effective and lots of material come off too even sliced the tail off after a few hits. Use the wyvern ammo for headshots when it is on the floor for maximum damage! Hope this helps..

                                                                  • Anonymous

It's difficult to tell the two apart, but I was lucky and took out the tail before Rathian showed up. I didn't have too much trouble with it if I just focused Rathalos though

                                                                    • Anonymous

I just need 3 more shells and 3 more Monster bone+'s and Ill be done. For any people new to MHW who are struggling. All I can say for Rathalos is Gtg and you can hunt him in Barroth gear. I do so in Tobi Kadachi's gear since he is weak to Dragon, Lightning, Water and Ice.
