Stygian Zinogre Combat Info

  • Kinsect Extracts:
    • Red: Head/Forelegs
    • Orange: Chest/Back/Hindlegs
    • White: Tail
  • Enraged mode: Turns red and has large AOE attacks
  • Its tail, while severable, is very tough and tenderizing it before attacking it is recommended.
  • While Stygian Zinogre is charging up, he will call down a row of "lightning" strikes (Dragon Element) down either side of his body. You can stand under his head for free hits.
  • Its powered-up state is cancelled when it flinches or is toppled. When its hide toughens, it becomes more vulnerable to elemental attacks.
  • Hunters can catch Dracophage Bugs on Stygian Zinogre by knocking him down while he is in his charged state, then positioning themselves near the monster's back and using the Capture Net
    • When using the Capture Net, be sure to aim for the back. Using the Capture Net on other parts of Stygian Zinogre's body will have no effect.
    • Hunters can also obtain Stygian Zinogre Dragonlocks using this method.
    • If the hunter successfully catches any Dracophage Bugs using this method, the time that Stygian Zinogre remains in its charged state will be significantly decreased.

MHW Stygian Zinogre Combat Tips

Defeating the Stygian Zinogre in Monster Hunter World's Iceborne expansion requires a combination of understanding its mechanics, exploiting weaknesses, and strategic gameplay.

  • Stygian Zinogre is susceptible to elemental damage, especially thunder. Equip a Thunder element weapon to maximize your damage output during its charged-up state.
  • Perform a diving dodge move when Stygian Zinogre unleashes its powerful Energy Blast. This not only helps you avoid the attack but also presents an opportunity to redirect the blast back to the monster, dealing additional damage.
  • Stay close to the monster's side during its charged-up state to avoid lunging attacks. This positioning not only ensures your safety but also sets the stage for counter-attacks.
  • Recognize Stygian Zinogre's moments of weakness, particularly when it is enraged and full of dragon energy. Seize these opportunities to unleash a barrage of attacks, capitalizing on its weakened defense.
  • Equip the Dragon Mantle to nullify dragon effects during the battle. This provides an additional layer of defense against Stygian Zinogre's dragon-based assaults.
  • Prioritize dragon resistance armor to mitigate the impact of Stygian Zinogre's dragon-based attacks. This enhances your overall resilience during the battle.
  • Use the Clutch Claw to execute a Flinch Shot in response to Stygian Zinogre's aggressive movements. This technique capitalizes on the monster's momentum, bringing it down and creating openings for powerful combos.
  • Carry Nulberries to counteract the effects of Dragonblight promptly. This ensures that your weapons and gear maintain optimal performance throughout the encounter.
  • Focus on breaking Stygian Zinogre's forelimbs to weaken the monster. This tactic creates opportunities to topple it, allowing for powerful hits and regaining control of the battle.

      Correctly Pronounced "Sti-jee-yun Zih-no-gurr." Not "Sti-jin Zeye-no-gurr" nor "Steye-jee-yun. Zee-no-gurr"
I get that it doesn't matter that much, I just wanted to let people who didn't know understand that they sounded like absolute buffoons. (No offense)

I love this guy, took a while for the fight to click with me, but once it did it was very fun. Has a better theme and fight than regular zinogre imo. I just really love how aggressive he is, even when he's limping away he's still a challenging fight. I like the armor designs more, but I think it doesn't really match many things, being just black red and white. I never really got the zinogre hype, but fighting this guy for the first time was pure STRESS, and I mean it, my palms were literally sweaty and I had to take a shower by the time I barely beat him. He did like half my health (with health boost 3) with his back flop. Overall great dude, 9/10 monster.

took a few hunts to grow on me (i.e. minor skill issue) but now that it's done its growing it's one of my favourite fights

          • Anonymous

Mother****er attacks like Eddy/Christie from Tekken; utterly relentless with tight openings. I love the fight, though.

Here is something I wish I knew earlier: 19 Dragon defense doesn't do ****, if you don't have at least 20 you can say goodbye all elemental damage you are doing thanks to that stupid dragonblight... Hitting for 9 damage with an ice charge blade

              • Anonymous

He is the guy that lives depressedly in the shadow of his older brother, the regular zinogre, who is a beast at everything and gets perfect grades. But since he's weak to thunder, you can murder his older brother and then kill him a sword made from his older brother. Also low-key the best two monsters in the game

                • Anonymous

probably the most fair fight in the entire expansion, with just a few tries you can easily no-hit him consistently with every weapon

                  • Anonymous

I still don't understand why only some (GS, Lance & SA) of his weapons are able to roll-back to the first versions, not all of them. The only thing I found in common with those 3 are that they have slap-on part designs but that doesn't really make sense.

                    • Anonymous

Honestly the most fun fight in MR by far except maybe Glavenus IMO. The double jump then spin attack is one of the coolest things I've seen a monster do yet.

So I've beaten this guy before and I'd just finished killing raging brachy, but when I fought this guy in the HR arena he just started kicking my ass when I couldn't end his power up with the bug net. The first time worked but I tried twice after when I wallbanged him and stopped trying when it was clear nothing was happening. Is the net hitbox super sensitive, and if so, where in particular is a good spot to aim?

So I was collecting tracks for this and was getting research levels with a friend if attacked us so we decided to take it o n I was trying out longsword(main glaive) and my friend was a hammer user so we fought styingin zinorge and captured it I was very surprised we beat it as we had pre rajang/zinorge stuff. I liked the long sword so I decided to make a new one with the material s as I couldn't make armor. I like the design the batte and the weapons. 10/10 fight

he is like the evil counterpart to Zinogre, when i was far away from him he looks like a robot. also the move where he dive bombs 3 times then strikes after you was really cool, I managed to dodge all dive bombs but only once dodged the strike

I expected this monster to be worse than rajang (after my FIRST nightmarish encounter with rajang). So I did farm farm farm until I thought I was ready. And there comes my first encounter with stygy. It was surprisingly easy... Maybe I get a little gitgud after bashing rajang to extinction

This motha*****a Wolf is impossible tô beat solo ! It adds The worst of the vanilla Zinogre with The worst of the Tempered Kirin, lighting Strikes anytime anywhere and is one shot kill!

OK, am I missing anything, it says Weak to Thunder... but when I equipe Thunder Weaps it's Blue Outlined Damage which means it powers up the Dragon attack and Red Lightning it does.... then further on here in this Wiki, it says "Blast" Damage? what gives?

                                        • Anonymous

It was just the first beast I encountered in the ice area of the Guiding lands. I would have never guessed that this thing is special in any way... in fact it was the first armor of the GL I got completed alpha and betas from...and then making not any use of it cause I run on Gun Lance. Getting the 2 full Zinogre sets was much harder. On the other hand they have this Goku Sayajin monkey constantly smashing his ass in my face spending millions on his introductions video...dunno. Seems a bit imbalanced.

Lance build made this guy absolute trivial. Also. The long sword from this guy is absolutely insane looking.

Another tanky and faster than the speed of light monster and it isn't even a new monster it's just another subspecies. This game stopped being fun when Iceborne released

If you're wondering how to upgrade the weapons from r11 to r12 you need to get materials from the tempered stygian zinogre that spawns in the hoarfrost region on level 7

                                                • Anonymous

Does Stygian Zinogre destroy your armor? I heard from a friend who played the older games that it destroyed armor after each hit. Is this true?

                                                  • Anonymous

I don't know myself, but is Stygian Zinogre generally an invader? I know they generally like colder environments, but do they also wander into other locales I ask because from what I could tell of where we saw it fight int he trailer, we may get a Hoarfrost zone for Guiding Lands, where he would likely be the level 4 or 6 monster. But if he's an Invader, he would show up in other zones that are levelled like Rajang did when he was introduced.
