Glavenus Combat Info

  • Kinsect Extracts:
    • Red: Head/Tail
    • Orange: Back/Body
    • White: Legs
    • Green: Forelegs
  • Enraged mode: Throat glows a fiery red. Sparks its tail to light and inflicts fireblight status effect mhw sFireblight. (Firecharges are independent of enrage mode)
  • You can obtain shiny drops by causing its firecharged throat to explode, after either dealing enough damage or well aimed slinger shot (Puddle Pod is very effective)
  • Tenderizing the hindlegs is very effective since its head and tail are very high up and might be difficult for some weapons to attack.
  • Its back is riddled with breakable spots, making attacks from above very effective.
  • Be cautious when its throat starts to glow, it will start blasting fireballs. They stick to the floor, causing mhw fire damageFire damage in the area around them, and explode after a moment.
  • Be aware that its throat and head are separate hitzones, but attacking either will cause firecharged throat threshold damage
  • Shock Traps work well against it if you want to attack it's tail, if you would rather attack it's throat easily, Pitfall Traps are very effective
  • Fireproof Mantle can be extremely useful to reduce mhw fire damageFire damage and make you immune to fireblight status effect mhw sFireblight
  • Damaging its throat while it is glowing will cause it to fall to the ground over his back.
  • Be especially weary whenever it puts its tail in its mouth. It is an opportunity for damage but he might do a very high damage rotating attack.
    • This devastating attack takes about three seconds to charge. If your main weapon is a weapon with a counterattack ability, (The Longsword for example) take advantage of the free damage opportunity, count three seconds, then perform the counterattack.
  • Severing the tail: Glavenus' tail has a mechanic which stops damage going to the tail sever threshold when its tail is not flaming. This would make its tailtip only severable while it is flaming because that is the only time the threshold can take damage. The Lance's Claw counter is very effective, as you can take an easy hit whenever it attacks you with its tail.
You can chip the tail however, by hitting tailbase with any type of damage, even when its not flaming. Its separate part from severable tailtip, with its own hitzone and breaking treshold.

MHW Glavenus Combat Tips

Glavenus, a formidable adversary, employs an arsenal of tail-focused attacks. The recommended strategy involves utilizing Clutch Claw weapon techniques to erode its armor, seizing moments to retaliate after it executes various maneuvers.

Exercise caution during the tail slam maneuver. Glavenus, after slamming its tail behind, initiates a fiery spin with a wide reach. Maintain a safe distance or swiftly dash to the rear of its legs to evade the tail swipe.
The tail slam has minimal setup, but the tail briefly rises before the slam. Effective evasion can be achieved through well-timed sidesteps.
Stay alert when Glavenus opens its mouth, signaling an impending bite with its fiery jaws.
Be wary of a cunning move where Glavenus bites its tail before unleashing a charged spin with considerable reach. To avoid this, keep a safe distance, adhere closely behind its left leg, or execute a precisely timed dive.

Consider these additional tips to enhance your strategy in this encounter:

  • Use Fireproof, Vitality, or Temporal Mantles for fire damage and Fireblight Resistance.
  • In the Ancient Forest, exploit traps in Area 8 and suspended boulders in Area 12.
  • Fire attacks cause Fireblight; cure with rolls, water, Nulberries, or Cleanser Booster.
  • Dodge Glavenus' fireballs when its throat glows.
  • In Wildspire Wastes, use a Screamer Pod to lure Glavenus into a sinkhole in Area 8 for extra damage.
  • Glavenus has turf wars with Diablos and Black Diablos in the Wildspire Wastes, enhancing damage opportunities.

Extremely fun monster. I loved him in previous games, and I love him even more now! I honestly feel like the people who openly dislike his fight for being "aids" or "cancer" are just not that good at the game, he isn't that hard. Idk why people complain about his wide tail swipe arcs, just move out of the way, or better yet, on certain moves (not the mega spin one) you can clutch onto him and avoid it entirely. For weapons that can block or counter (LS, GS, GL, CB, HBG, Lance, and to a lesser extent, SnS.) Most of his super heavy hitting move could possibly be nullified without dodging. As for the weapons who cant, (IG, DB, LBG, Bow, Hammer, and Swaxe) I'd recommend bringing evade extender and/or evade window if you REALLY canst stop getting hit. One of the more predictable monsters, easy 9/10

It's pure aids fighting him in the arena. Very few things to use against him, he's also too ****ing big. His tail swept the entire pit holy ****

        • Anonymous

I cut the tail on my first time fighting him lmao. When he was dying and about to go to sleep, I kept clutch claw attacking on his tail until it snapped

          • Anonymous

So his tail can only be cut off when it's aflame. It's funny watching Asmongold's chat arguing whether it's true or not lol

cool looking monster, but why make it so that if you hit it's arms your weapon bounces. killed the whole fight for me

If you are trying to learn how to play LS this is a great monster to learn your counters on. And it’s also fun with LS.

Few tips for easy kill on his guy:
                    1. Craft Laguna Glaive for boost damage. Most Master rank fights that present a roadblock, from my point of view, requires you to craft weapon with elements that is effective against the boss so that you will have less chance encounter timeout in slaying boss.

                    2. Glavenus roaming region overlaps with Diablos. So causing the sand pit to collapse in area 8 by hitting the wingdrakes to make them scream and call Diablos to break the ceiling in Area 13 to reach area 8 will make it easy to lure Glavenus to Diablos when it is enraged.

                    3. As mentioned before, the main strategy is to lure Glavenus to Diablos each time it is enraged and each turf war encounter will cause 1920 damage (minimum damage from my observation) to Glavenus.

                    4. Bring mega barrel bomb because sometimes, he will run to area 7 and might be inflicted with sleep by the masked tribal creatures there when you fight. So you can get 1 free sleep-bombing chance. (not guaranteed) Or, there is a felyne there that can help you trap the boss for free-hit.

I am using insect glaive (Laguna Glaive) as my main so....I am not having much issue dodging his attack. Hope your fight will be a breeze using the above tips.

He is fast and hits hard very similar to Barioth. For this I highly recommend to take evade window and/or evade extender. If you do this I would also take constitution. Obviously I would take fire resistance.
If you can (I know it’s hard) break the tail. I think breaking the head will decrease the damage of his fire balls. To break the tail I recommend any tall weapon with sever. If you are taking the DBs or SnS I would use the clutch claw to you advantage. I believe that’s all I have to say. Don’t give up! Happy hunting and hoped this helped!!

Hey guys I that I might share some tips for him. They are probably not that good but it’s all I got. So you usually want to take a long reach so you can hit his tail and head. When his tail is glowing always go for the tail because you need to try to cut it off. I doesn’t do much but it still decreases the range. When his tail is rusted go for the head. When he does his all around tail swipe I think if you stand by the left leg if won’t hit you. I don’t exactly remember. When it comes to skills fire resistance and evade window really help. I always use health boost but that’s me. That’s all I have to say for now. Remember the hardest part is not to give up! Happy hunting!

Why isn't the Insect glaive called a Glaivenus? :D

tried fighting with greatsword and got rekt the 1st time.
2nd time I literally just spammed mounted attacks on his legs, only got knocked down twice out of the ~30 mounts it took to kill it.

I did cut his tail on my first encounter using Jyatoduous LS XD
He is not pretty hard to solo but the main problem is Jyatodus LS sometimes bounces when hit him in wrong spot XD

I fought this thing with a LS for the first time and he COMPLETELY destroyed me but then I brought the IG and trashed him. (I still beat him with the LS but it was one of my most painful hunts that I have ever played and I can say that because I played MHfU)The IG was super fun to fight him with

Those having issues with this quest in 2021, I have only been playing this game for a couple of weeks, intensively playing it though but still, a new player, my advice is, use your palicos shieldspire, it is a game changer for the solo player. It gives you room to breath and take on assigments where you would struggle before (or at least for me personally).

Dont get me wrong it will still be a challenge but like I said, shieldspire (specially the stooge) will give you a chance to catch your breath and also familiarize with the monsters attack, I am exclusively a bow user and using this made my life much easier.

This mission for example pose no challenge whatsoever, maybe I got lucky since these two monsters are the 2 ones I have fought the least since I had no interested on any of their weapons but even then the mission felt fine, plenty of time to spare and even had time to pick up tracks for investigations.

                                    Good luck!

                                    • Found a Mini Gold Crown at the size of "2190.73" I did find a smaller Acidic Glavenus at the size of "2087.75" but I don't know if they have the same size for both.

i will give you help if your stuck
so in this fight you want to do a lot of dodging in this fight whether if your using a long range weapon or a short range his tail attacks make up about 85% of his move set so if you dont want to die right away the go for the head
you can serve the tail but i would recommend attacking it when its not on fire also dont try to mount this guy because he has two different jump attacks he will also shoot fireballs out of his mouth three if he is enraged thees fireballs will explode in two seconds once it hits the ground so dont run into it ( one more thing when he jumps he will stab his tail into the ground but when he is enraged he will do this two times he will always hit you if you dodge to the side left or right so dont even try dodge backwards or superman dive to the side to avoid it ) - Smart Guy

                                        • Hello my fellow hunters, mortals seem to be having a problem with this monster so I thought I could shed some light on some forbidden tips. His tail jabs can be dodged by one roll, during his two jab attack you can roll twice to dodge both attacks. He has a animation were he grabs his tail either means his massive damage beyblade attack or his unenrage animation, either way you probably want to superman dive because 75% of the time its his beyblade attack. For the assigned quest when he retreats to the zone above diablos and summon him to deal around 200-500 damage and afterwords the´ll have a turf war which will do around 600 damage. Anyway my dads yelling at me to go to sleep, so good luck my fellow hunters (P.S please comment any problems you have and I will do my best to help)

he is a very cool monster and I expected for his great sword to be cool. "Sees great sword" wait what? I thought it would just be his tail stuck on a stick but this version works to I guess. but very cool fight and monster and weapons nonetheless.

I really like this monster. Its design is great and the fight is intense and engaging BUT I utterly despise its tail sever mechanic. There are few things more annoying than finally getting an opening just to have its tail stop glowing. I really hope this gets changed to a simple reduction rather than full immunity to sever.
